Did he realise what he was getting into?

VKORECTU

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Did he realize what he would getting into when he took on the role of Kirk?
I am referring to Paul Wesley.

Did he even have an inkling how his every move and genuflection would be analyzed by Trekkers and Trekkie alike the world over?

How his every utterance and move and gesture and step and hand wave would be pored over and nit picked over by thousands of people?

Do you think his performance would be effected by making him worry by these thoughts?

Do you think he would use the feedback to improve his performance?

He's been the star of a series that has a fanbase that's a little more in number yet just as rabid before, so I think he knows how to handle things like that.

Florence city official "here's some dukats, Mike. Go sculpt me a David"

Michelangelo "That's more of a Donatello thing. I couldn't possibly.."

official: "You can make it your own. Give it a foreskin or something."

Michelangelo "fans would hate me. I'm going to stick to painting ceilings."

You might as well ask if Ethan Peck knew what he was getting into with the role of Spock. Or Zachary Quinto, for that matter. Or, to be on-topic, did Chris Pine know what he was getting into?

(Hint: the answers are all ‘yes.’)

LOL, I think it's pretty telling that when reading each of your points...

move
genuflection
utterance
gesture
step
hand wave

...I couldn't help but see Shatner in all his hamming glory in my mind's eye!

It's going to be hard for Wesley, harder than for Chris Pine probably. But I think he's a pro and expected to be treated as an usurper for at least a while. That being said, if the criticism of his performance holds on for too long, I can imagine him adapting his acting style a bit. On his own or as directed. I certainly hope that he doesn't let anything related to the experience affect his mental health in any way.

Any actor taking on an iconic role faces these things. Same if he were Superman or James Bond, or Sherlock Holmes.

He should make the role his own. Shatner impressions (a la Star Trek Continues) are just cringe. Chris Pine owned it with his take.
Chris Pine is waiting to ‘own it again’ for his $13mil pay check! So someone better write him a good script before the enemy offers him $26mil to play Darth Vader! Maybe this Paul Wesley could be cast in the next movie if he is easier to write for? Maybe he could be paid $6.5mil which saves a bit of money?

Because he has a canon backstory? Pine Kirk is an alternate Kirk so people can make up what they want about him like fan fiction.

Kirk of the Abramsverse has three films of backstory behind him, including details that are now part of the "Prime" timeline. Guess what? They are also canon. Canon is not continuity. Canon is just the totality of official works.

This. Each actor brings their own piece to the role. That is the nature of acting. Trying to recreate someone else's work is a fool's errand.

They wouldn't have any of these problems if they would just move the franchise forward and stop mining the past....
