Spoilers 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' series [Spoiler Discussion]

I'm still holding out hope we get Qui-Gon's voice making an appearance in the next two episodes if not his Force Ghost. This will have to tide me over until then.

We almost have to. I don't know if Neeson will appear as a Ghost, or even new dialogue. But at least recycled dialogue. Or a Ghost based on archival footage. Or something.

They've built Obi-wan's crisis of faith around the metaphor of his failure to contact Qui-gon in the Force. Now that he's getting his groove back that's the logical endpoint for his story. Quite frankly, if they drop the ball on this after setting it up on a tee back in the first episode I'm going to be quite grumpy. Obi-wan MUST make some kind of contact with Qui-gon for the story to make thematic sense in it's conclusion.

Yep, I'm expecting to hear Qui-Gon's voice at some point in the last episode.
(Vader is about to kill Kenobi)

Qui-Gon Jinn's ghost: Anakin, Anakin, NOOOOOO!!!!!

(Observing Inquisitors break down in hysterical laughter while Kenobi uses the distraction to flee)

What is canon or not is irrelevant. Lucasfilm, Disney, whoever, state what is canon or not because they know how much it will engage people. They will change what is so-called canon or not for that purpose. They don't give a damn whether you are hating on it or loving it, all they care is that you are talking/arguing about it. They will and have taken non-canon shows/films things and put them in canon shows/films. Blurgghs for example.

Hook, line and sinker.

I only ever met three or four aikidoka, all Yudansha and three trained in Japan, that could effectively- I mean really effectively- apply 4th control. For the rest of us it was an ongoing study.
very true: the thing is really hard to do properly.
In our dojo we have some who can, though, and…it’s the most sadistic technique ever!

Literately the first thing they showed us in Part I was a recap of Obi-Wan & Anakin's relationship through the prequel movies, and it took pains to not only include Qui-Gon as the chief motivator for Kenobi's sense of responsibility, but also to very clearly reiterate that Qui-Gon still exists in the netherworld and that Yoda instructed Kenobi how to commune with him. And throughout the following episodes we've seen Ben repeatedly try to make contact, and fail.

If that's not a Chekhov's Gun plot point I don't know what is. He'll show up alright, most likely at the very end once Ben has finally forgiven himself and found the balance within. I'm also picturing him moving into an actual home instead of that cave and putting the sabres away in the chest, not buried out in the sands because: metaphor!

As for Liam Neeson; he's already reprised the role twice on Clone Wars, and once in tRoS, plus he's set to return for the Dooku episodes in 'Tales of the Jedi'. I'd be very surprised if he's not back for this too.

The only criticism I have if this show is the lightsaber movements don’t feel right, I can’t put my finger on why but it just feels off.

I'm sure he will appear, either at the very end or before the final duel with Vader.

Liam was in Atlanta a few weeks ago.

He referenced what he learnt form that racial comment he made a few years back.

White people can get away with anything.

Dialogue written by Donald Glover, who is black.

10 years of no practice will do that

That's a good way of explaining it away but I don't think it's that, the swords themselves don't look right, I think it's a prop/choreography issue rather than anything deliberate.

Final episode, duel with Vader. Obi-Wan about to win.
Qui-Gon Jinn's ghost: No! Obi-Wan. He will bring balance to the force. He IS the chosen one.

Disagree.
There's been a clear progression in the style every time he's used that thing so far. As first he draws it but is too afraid to ignite it. Then when he finally does it's out of sheer panic and he's waving it around wildly like an untrained youngling. And now we're seeing a returning confidence, and even a little of the old flourish creep back. I suspect that by the end there will be a sort of hybrid style to bridge the gap between the dashing General Kenobi, and the more focused, restrained and efficient Ben Kenobi was saw in ANH.

The only thing that might be visually distracting is the fact that we're not really used to see OT/PT sabres actually emit light as they should, and not just be rotoscoped effects that just sits on top of the footage.
I've seen people complain about this as it's "not authentic", and let me tell you; if Lucas had access to polycarbonate tubes, LEDs, and lithium-ion batteries in 1976 you can be damn well sure he'd have thrown the stupid spinny dowel and retroreflective tape rigs in the bin and gone with that instead. Rotoscoping was always a compromise because the materials and tech to achieve the effect in-camera (which is what he wanted) just wasn't there yet.

It could also be that they're using high exposure camera lens to better cope with the low lighting on the volume, and that's making the LED blades look a little more blown out than usual.

Either way it doesn't bother me. The sabre effect has never looked exactly the same way twice anyway, all that matters is that it works in the context it's being used and achieves the desired effect.

Obi-wan getting back in form. Nice.
And the ending... I almost forgot about that thing!

I hate canonical mechanics. :ack:

Especially when the creator / producer / showrunners never stick to or change what's canonical depending on which way the wind blows (see: Roddenberry regarding TAS; when produced, he considered it canon. A decade or so later, he said it was not, and post-Roddenberry, many TAS elements ended up seen or referred to in the Berman Trek era).
