That's a comics trope. It happened in Avengers (I) too.

This easily could have happened. Nhan and La'an could have served on a ship together before Nhan went back to the future with Discovery. I imagine La'an made a cheap shot and took out Nhan's breathers, so I'm going with La'an.

Well, Nhan did serve aboard the Enterprise prior to her transfer to Discovery. IIRC, she was the security chief, probably La'an's predecessor. La'an could have been one of Nhan's redshirts...

I couldn't recall if La'an was said to be new to the ship or had been around a while before her ascension.

She was absolutely new to the ship. In the first episode we see Pike reading her personnel file as he's flying on the shuttle up to board the Enterprise.

Then, when he first meets her, she states she was assigned to the ship as his replacement executive officer by Starfleet command (IE it's implied he had no say in this decision because it was an unexpected emergency.)

At the very end of that episode, that's when he offers her the posting as his chief of security on board the ship.
