While it wasn't the Enterprise, we almost had a TOS Connie show up in Into Darkness, it can be seen in a deleted scene set in Marcus's office
There's also concept art for the USS Iowa (original name of the Kelvin) in TOS style.

Again, I hope they refer to the novels a bit even if they are not canon. Final Frontier and Best Destiny by Diane Carey really develop and portray the characters of Robert April and George Kirk very well and they are some of my favorite Star Trek books. I still reread them to this day.

I think it goes without saying Robert April as depicted in the premiere is already very different than those novels. I mean, April of SNW is not English, nor does he wear a cardigan 24/7.
A flashback would be nice. Its fan boy service but yes I want archer along with tpol and shran at the commission of the Enterprise

I do wish they'd maintained the novels' characterisation. I loved April as a pacifist/idealist who had to turn command over to George whenever it came time to fire at something. It likely would have been a better character for Jonathan Archer since modern Trek has the Federation and Starfleet well entrenched by the TOS era and it's iffy they'd ever let someone like that near the top. But I love it nonetheless.
Yes! Yes! Yes! The novel's version of April was so much more interesting because he was a pacifist and George Kirk had a military mindset so one of the main points of the novels was that a great captain needed to be a blend of both Robert April and George Kirk and that turned out to be James Kirk. Let's see what they do with this Robert April. I really hope they do justice to his character.

2 books, several comics and an episode counts as enough history I would say.
While I appreciate that it has no bearing on TV and film production. Any more than the comics had an impact on Strange New World's crew for Pike during this era.

Only the animated episode counts as part of continuity. And they've just overwritten the imagery of the thing, although in no way have they necessarily contradicted the events in it.
I saw the cartoon episode when it originally aired and have no desire to revisit it. I haven't read the novels or comics books and don't intend to.
Aside from, "Oh yeah, that guy," Robert April is a clean slate. If SNW chooses to develop the character further, I'm sure it will be entertaining.

Over at Star Wars we can't even admit to enjoying Legends anymore without being told how terrible it was and how the holy canon (you know, the one that also brought Palpatine back to life, had full fledged time travel, and had Inquisitors flying by hanging onto rotorcraft lightsabers) is so much deeper and more serious than anything Legends ever had.
We also have Orwellian retconning thrown at us and are browbeat into claiming that we somehow always knew that 2003 Clone Wars, Droids, and Ewoks cartoons as well as the 2 Ewok movies were never canon even at the time of airing decades ago. Strangely enough the people asking us to say this go silent if we ask them to in turn admit that by these same rules, the Young Indiana Jones tv show was also never canon.
Huh, I must have missed out on those discussions. I mean, I recall reading Legends novels where Palaptine came back to life, had a son, and an imposter son, and lots of Dark Jedi running around. I enjoyed some parts, and ignored others. I enjoyed parts of current canon and ignore others. Also, when I was in a SW fan club the biggest thing that was agreed upon was Jar-Jar and Ewoks suck.
So, seems like a zero sum game at this point.

That's fine. The 2 Star franchises have a long history of rivalry and borrowing from each other that lasts to this day. The comparisons are even more direct now as Star Wars shifts to primarily a tv series driven franchise
Well I feel sorry for you or other fans who don't read Star Trek books. You are really missing out. The two novels by Diane Carey about Robert April and George Kirk were so good that if they were made into movies, they would be easily better than the majority of Star Trek movies out now and ranked up there with Wrath of Khan or Undiscovered Country.
Don't just assume SNW will do a good job on April. That's not automatic given that other new Trek shows Discovery and even Picard have been heavily criticized by many fans for how they have written their characters (look in this forum). I know the books have done a great job but it remains to be seen whether SNW will.
The New Frontier book series is also certainly better than any of the New Trek shows by far it's not even close.

As someone who tried to get into Star Trek's expanded universe so to speak, the continuing self-contradiction kept pulling me out. The Romulan War novels don't fit with Star Trek Legacy video game. IDW's own comics contradict each other, namely Mission's End and Year Five. We can forget about Star Trek Countdown or Countdown to Darkness being remotely canon no as both have been trampled by Picard and Strange New Worlds respectively. Star Trek Khan IDW comic doesn't fit with the Eugenics Wars novels. Those autobiographies of Starfleet officers are contradicted almost as soon as they come out (Picard's bio has been trampled by his show for example).
At least with Star Wars Legends, there's a basically consistent alternate universe that goes from 1978-2014 and spans not just novels but comics, video games, and even tabletop rpgs. Star Trek's expanded universe is not internally consistent enough to provide an entire alternate setting (well maybe the Starfleet Battles universe, maybe)
Easy. Having genuinely important things to be concerned with. I know some see it as a sacred duty to agonise over the minutiae of their entertainment choices. I'm after a pleasant, intelligent diversion. If a choice is no longer pleasant, I choose something else. Now, if someone wants to pay me handsomely to dissect their creative choices, that's a different matter.
