So it seems they may have subtly moved the Eugenics war from the 1990s to sometime in 2020s/30s?

Trek has long danced around the issue as its timeline separated from our reality more and more. I have been watching since the late 70s reruns and seen all of it at some point.

Personally I'm fine with a little retconn of the timeline to keep some events into the future. Particularly with all the time travel going on. Some of the novels have creative ways of explaining these type of things even if they are non-canon.

Curious as to the new Noonian-Singh's relationship to Khan. I imagine at some point we will learn more about her background.

PIC establishes that 1996 is the year the Khan Project started, so it isn't a full retcon.

Yeah, the apparent decision to change the continuity was made explicit this week on Picard.*

I applaud it. The franchise is long overdue for some of this.

Producer Henry Alonso Myers addresses this, too:

The date on the "Funding Report" is a tip of the hat to the old continuity, nothing more. It's noteworthy that Soong's first appearance in the series is entirely about his resources for this kind of thing being yanked out from under him, and then we learn that he's not yet even solved the basic trick of keeping his "children" alive.

*Though if one's in denial, I can see a loophole in what they did.

No, that's the year the after-the-point report was published.

Still hoping that report is actually about Chaka Khan.

picard having the project start in 96 is a retconn itself since khan originally took power in 92. But that's ok

Guys remember, no Picard Season 2 spoilers outside of tags.

    Picard S2 Spoilers

There is a tab on the top right that has a date range of '01.02.92 to 06.07.96', 1992 to 1996 the original years of the Eugenics Wars before SNW apparently retconned them.

It's not the start of the Khan project, it's just named after Khan. Probably Soong's own attempts to get funding to create Khan like augments.

    No...

To repeat what I said in a different thread in regards to the Eugenics Wars only hours ago:
Considering it was established in PIC that the Shenzhen Convention exists and its implied that there’s a direct link between the ratification of the Shenzhen Conventions and the end of the Eugenics Wars in the ‘90s due to how genetic manipulation was banned and seen has a huge no-no as of 2024.

SNW tied in the second civil war - these political movements involving BLM and MAGA - to connect present day to the conflict. So clearly, the hyper politicization of today is tied into the Shenzhen Conventions being torn up by 2026 which leads to the Eugenics Wars resuming and that’s how the conflicts are connected, and fits into retconning how the ‘90s Eugenics War was WW3. Since Adam Soong had connections to private military groups and was experimenting on soldiers. Philip Green’s eco-terrorist faction must have been a part of the second civil war and resumption of the Eugenics War, since he was specifically cited in the historical database of the USS Defiant.

DIS also shows fighting in Riverside, Indiana, not far from where Shannon O’Donnell lived. Presumably, they were fighting an invading Eastern Coalition before the bombs dropped, but who knows anymore. Maybe it was footage of the civil war turning hot by that point.
Plus, how are the writers going explain Khan in STID saying he came from an era nearly 300 years ago, since that puts him in the 1990s timeframe? And the launch of the Botany Bay was pre-Kelvin divergence.

They won’t, that’s how. And never again will there be a mention of the Eugenics War having taken place in the 90s.

I'm thinking some of the historians of Pike and Kirk's time who care about such distinctions might argue that the unrecognized-at-the-time start of the Second American Civil War might be backdated to the early 1960's...?

Keep in mind that "Khan" was a title of nobility and leadership, not just a surname.

All I know is moving it to 2026 makes little sense if part of the problem is Trek catching up to the real world. In four years, they essentially have the same problem again.

Agreed. It makes sense to me to leave everything when it was originally cited as happening, and just fill in the gaps as we go.

    Assumptions abound.

One, it could have been an old project or funding request based on the success of the supermen like Khan.

Two, it could be an intelligence report after Khan had fled.

He's pretty much just another asshole with a webcam and a tip jar and without anything of value to offer on OnlyFans or LiveJasmin, so he winds up on YouTube.

It's a confidential funding report for "Project Khan." Says so on the cover page.

In the fifth episode of Picard, "Fly Me To The Moon," a "Doctor Werner" revokes Soong's funding and license (license to do what?) and forbids him to engage in an future genetic research:
