TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

Question for anyone who has seen the new DE. Some have reported the Vger cloud flyby sequence has been trimmed. Although this is good news for the pacing of the movie, I'm worried about Goldsmith's score. Did we lose part of the score? Some of my favorite orchestral peices of the movie was during the Vger fly in sequence

Based on the 2001 DVD, you do lose some of the repetition in both The Cloud and Vejur Flyover. I've tried to imagine that the score could have been composed this way, but I can't.

(Fan rumor has it these segments of the score were in fact composed to allow for this kind of trimming, since the state of post-production was largely an unknown at the time Goldsmith wrote and recorded this stuff. But I can't hear it in any other way than how it is in full, on both album and theatrical cut).

The End Title however suffers the most. The full TMP theme (both runs of it) are looped before you go into Ilia's Theme. Basically they pulled a Lucas. They should have brought Goldsmith back to rearrange his medley for extending the titles.

Come to think of it, if I remember right, the Nemesis end-credits sequence was forcibly extended in a similar way for the movie compared to how it sounds on the album.

The most rousing endorsement I can imagine for this Director's Edition: my wife did not fall asleep, only to wake up and complain, "Jeez, they're still flying over this stupid thing?"
On the contrary. She spent most of the time in rapt attention. The pacing, sound, and visuals, you name it, are so superior to the original theatrical mess. Did they fix everything? No. But they fixed enough to make the film thoroughly enjoyable.

I (like many of us) fall into the trap of spending a movie runtime on my phone. I rewatch the Trek movies every year and have found that the familiarity makes it easy to do this. Not a knock on the quality (I do it for all of them). My copy of the original Director's Edition of the DVD got a lot of use over the years, but honestly, not all of it was me paying close attention.

This time, I was watching with rapt attention. It's funny how something I've seen so many times before seems new because I'm actually focusing on it. I never noticed how many times McCoy wanders onto the bridge for no reason and then leaves a few minutes later. I can't remember him having any lines both times he does this.

I also paid closer attention to Ilia's replacement, never thinking much of it before. Looking into it, Chief DiFalco was played by Shatner's then wife.

I realize none of these may be new to many, but I'd never noticed these things before.

Fan rumor-
It has been stated by the individuals who actually worked on the original Director's Edition back in 2001 that having the score potentially be edited down was part of the plan. Mike Matessino even said that Jerry knew about the cuts when they were happening (He was involved with that release + it's bonus features) and even asked which portions were cut. For this new Director's Edition, Mike even stated that the score was edited first so the film could be edited around it.

This by the way is why we have this brand new visual effect shot for Spock's Walk.

It was to extend a specific part of the sequence to accommodate the score. For every single cut of the film before this new Director's Edition, a three-second portion of the 'Spock's Walk' score was trimmed to accommodate an in-film edit when Spock flies over the camera after entering the orifice to cutting to a close-up shot of his face. Thanks to this new shot, Jerry's work on 'Spock Walk' plays at its full duration.

That's unfortunate. Beggars can't be choosers but I wish the physical media version would allow the option to view the "longer" version (vger/cloud)of the film but with the updated effects. Basically an exact recreation of the 2001 version but in 4k

I would watch the longer version if I'm a Jerry Goldsmith mood. I guess I would now need to watch the theatrical cut for that. "The Cloud " is my favorite peice from the soundtrack. If those sequences were truncated from the theatrical vs 2001 DE, I didn't mind it. But if its now truncated even more from 2001 to 2022 then it could be somewhat problematic for me . We'll see. I reserve final judgment until I see it.

Have Jerry Goldsmith come back, rearrange his end credits score and then record it for the 2001 DVD?

I doubt there was any money at all to handle that.

I only sit for the credits of the theatrical cut. I bail partway through the DE credits.

It shouldn't be any more trimmed this timed than for the prior Director's Cut DVD.

Having watched the cloud sequence, it doesn’t seem all that different from the 2001 version.

In terms of just cutting and length, the only difference is the bit right after Spock enters V’Ger’s orifice* being slightly extended to use the full Goldsmith cue.

*=OH MYYYY.

I think the main reason why the lounge sequence looks cruddy is that they clearly didn't have the original photography to use. They're stuck with the '70s era compositing, and then adding even more roto, feathering the edges on the original image. Trimming on top of trimming. It could definitely be improved, but maybe the time or money just wasn't available. Ten bucks says a fan does it better in the next few months.
There's always the home video release in September for them to try fixing it up.

I know I already suggested this, but realistically. Is there any chance they might be persuaded to give up on that scene and leave the backdrop as it was in the theatrical cut?

I personally would've dropped it before it went out if I couldn't get it to look anywhere near good. It was a nice try, but if you don't have the time or the funds to do it, let it go.

I'd say those are good words to follow, but 0.3 seconds later I realized that if everyone followed that line of thinking, we never would have gotten a Director's Edition of TMP at all. The film is just in a much better state than it was theatrically. While the Officer's Lounge is certainly rough in this edition, I stand by it over the previous ones.

I've had the Director's Edition on DVD for years and that's the version I'm used to. I've watched the new 4K on Paramount+ a couple of times now and it looks and sounds great.

But I'm confused. I'm watching the other version now that's on Paramount+. Is that the theatrical release?

Does the theatrical have the overture at the start? The iTunes version has it with a plain black background whereas the DE has a starfield.
