TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

I still have to sit this one out. Sit out all of Streaming Trek in fact until the TMP exclusive window is up. I've already skipped everything over the past year, and I'm fine with that.

After giving it some thought, I think I'm going to do the same. I can wait until the home media release in October. It seems more sense to plunk money down on the BD rather than subscribing to the service. That way I own it and can watch it whenever I fancy. Likewise, if I'm lucky, Season One of SNW will be available on Blu-Ray by year's end.

TOS was already rehashing story elements the second time a godlike being in a beige shirt started threatening the ship.

There's no one-size-fits-all rule says a rehash of something can't be better than the original. Even though rehashing in general should definitely be discouraged.

I do consider Star Trek The Motion Picture to be superior in every way to TOS' The Changeling, which I regard as an average and forgettable (though not actually bad by any stretch, even though Kirk-fasttalks-the-computer is also rehashed) episode.

Context and nuance matter. You're allowed to be critical of opposing things.

Even TOS, in its short run, rehashed story elements. Hell, the female crewmember falling for the villain was used twice, and almost three times, until somebody pointed out that having McGivers and Masters betraying the crew just a few episodes apart might look a bit silly. I think people are just looking for confirmation bias.

There is a ton of silly stuff in the new Trek and I lament the fact that they don't seem to take the basics of the fictional science seriously but there was a ton of silly stuff in earlier Trek too.
Agreed. They long ago started relying on tropes to appeal to their core audience. I think the first time it really started bothering me was the 2nd season of DS9, when they suddenly started saying they were a family to their colleagues. Of course, this dates much further back than that. It's just when I started feeling like they were overtly trying to win over the audience.

Since then, it seems like they rely more and more on the tropes, returning characters, and repeated plots. There aren't many original ideas. Now, I can barely sit through an episode of Picard or Disco. The freshest series in the franchise are Lower Decks and Prodigy, where they wink at the throwbacks.

I would love Trek to explore new ideas. But we seem to be in far too much of an era of throwbacks. Unfortunately any time a franchise tries to do something new, it seems like the fan base rebels. Trek has been super guilty of it since ENT season 4.

Indeed and it is what it is at this point. The old is not better; the new is not worse. It's just different retellings of similar (or the same) stories.

Just started watching. (I'll be buying the disc, but I have the day off and figured why not?)

As I edit in new thoughts, I just want to be clear that it looks amazing and I'm so happy that I no longer have to choose between the clear HD theatrical or the murky and soft DE.

I don't love the sparkles they added to the opening credits (Mostly because the animation framerate on the sparkles seems a bit janky), but I get why they did it I guess. And the text is finally horizontally centered. This makes me happy.

Klingon ships still have their obvious matte lines. This surprises me, but I suppose it's an early sign I should be reigning back my expectations for the rest of the film.

Dialogue translation is in the typeface I prefer. (The one they brought back for Beyond.) Klingon text in the second screen on the station report. Three little Klingon ships shown too. The "plotted a course" dialogue is backed up by some green text on the screen. Nice.

Vulcan looks beautiful. Though that matte painting on the left in the close-ups still distracts. Darn.

Starfleet HQ looks very nice, and the on-screen text is less obtrusive now. It's so good to see this sequence without that "frozen image" look the DVD DE has. They didn't erase the guy wearing the silver TMP jacket, thank goodness. :D

The workbee still has that crazy jumping matte problem, which is weird because the shot now has a CG travel pod added to it. You'd think with that effort expended, cleaning up the matte edge would be a cinch.

No travel pod stand matte when they come in for docking. [Fist pump]

Maybe it was something they didn't have original elements for. I know TNG used footage of the Klingon Cruiser (only one in the frame) in it's first or 2nd season. May not have been put back.

Seeing this at the theater on May 22 with my girl.
Quite excited.
Saw it twice on the big screen as a 4 year old boy with my dad. Once with happy meal winning tickets

...I'm getting swept up watching the movie now so I might stop there. :)
Were you live posting from Paramount? ;)

I’m a little confused, as of 10:26pm PST, it’s not up on Paramount+ yet. How did you find it already?

I wish! Already up in Australia.

Final thoughts add-ons...

Brand new observation lounge windows/wall/view!

When V'Ger goes pfft at the end, it's now seen front-on instead of from the side. Which looks great, and keeps the beautiful symmetry of the shot intact.

Spock and Bones now keep their own correct arm bands on for the last shot! :D
