Spoilers Legacy character announced for SNW

It's poor timing. Just gross. Diminishes my excitement significantly.
Nope. Done with being nice to Trek.
Which one ever helps you sleep at night.
Dude, this is embarrassing hyperbole over a couple photos and a casting announcement. You have no idea about the way the character is going to be used or how lengthy his stay on the show will be. Settle down.

As far as the timing, they announced it now because filming on Season 2 is beginning now so it would have inevitably leaked, so they wanted to get out ahead of it and release the information on their terms. It's not trying to undermine Captain Pike or the premiere of the show or anything. If anything it's trying to hype it up.

My guess is that now that Captain Garth has gone off the deep end, Pike gets promoted to Fleet Captain in order to deal with some crisis that comes up in Season 2. Newly promoted Captain Kirk arrives in his own ship and is briefly taken under Pike's wing and mentored by him, and that accounts for Kirk saying he met him when he was promoted to fleet captain. Then Kirk and his crew will serve as an eventual spin-off TOS reboot a few years from now.

I doubt they'd get rid of the red highlights, they specifically put them there as a nod to TOS.

And while they’ve been few and far between, we’ve gotten a few images from SNW Season 1, and those fire engine red highlights are still there post-Discovery.

I would think if they were going to have changed them it wouldn’t be in Season 2 of SNW, as they’re moving closer to TOS.

If this happens, I would hope it’s treated as a “modern expansion” of the original show—additional TOS stories never seen before, that just happen to have updated production values—rather than a full-on replacement.
You still have the Blu-rays and DVDs. It's not going to replace them. It can only supplement them.

So is the actor any good?

The only thing on his IMDB that I've seen him in was a forgettable episode of Smallville 20 years ago.

LoL! Same thing I recognised him from. Anson Mount was also in Smallville that season.
He became better known for his stint in Vampire Diaries.

Quite aware — but I’d rather original TOS remained in there as part of the story mix. (And for the moment, there’s no reason to think it won’t be, at least vaguely.).

He’s a good actor, from the several seasons of The Vampire Diaries I’ve seen. He didn’t blow me away, but he did well with some fairly hammy/soapy material, and was engaging and entertaining enough throughout that I’m intrigued.

All I’d seen Ethan Peck in before Discovery was 10 Things ‪‪I Hate About You, the tv series. ‪‪I was less optimistic about his casting announcement than ‪‪I am Wesley’s, and ‪‪I ended up liking his Spock a great deal.

While "Precipice" is a shit episode in and of itself with a terrible A plot, Mount's performance is one of the best guest jobs of the season. And the scene where he smashes his face into the mirror and then stands there with that creepy-ass smile and the blood running down his face is one of the best of the entire early-years run.

"Prodigal" is a half-assed follow-up to one of the best episodes of the season, with Wasilewski's performance being by-the-numbers good enough to service more Rosey/Glover banjos. And one I always skip.
