Worf is somewhere in the middle.
Reed is probably good, but nothing sticks out, which puts him in the middle too.

Tyler (the Security Chief was a Security Risk!)
Chekov ("Why not simply waporize them?" He had no idea what the f*** he was talking about!)

Odo because he can hide anywhere, be anything, and literally embodies "long arm of the law".
Worf because he's a master of Klingon cutlery.
Tuvok for Vulcan snark.
And Tasha because she was a character with great potential, cut down tragically before it could blossom.
That was Denise Crosby's fault. She didn't like the early TNG product and wanted out.

I don't really think of Chekov as a security officer so he didn't make the list for me. Yar never really got a chance to be much of a character, same with Ash and Nhan, so they didn't make my list either. So my picks are Odo, Worf, Tuvok and Reed.

Poor Reed wasn't used as much as he could've been on Enterprise, but I feel like he and Phlox were the two characters that suited the series the most and were having the most fun, and he's one of my favourites.

  1. Tuvok
  2. Odo
  3. Worf
  4. Yar

Reasons, in no order:

Odo was like dust bunnies on Quark's back and it never ceased to be entertaining to watch the two of them bicker.

Worf could get beaten up a lot, most entertainingly when Data did it, but he had quite a presence.

Tuvok had a sort of snark that can only be described as "logical". Especially in episodes like "Meld" that add in extra complexities that test him. How Vulcan lore was expanded upon was given the best treatment in VOY compared to the others. Whatever else VOY may have been imperfect at, most Tuvok-centric episodes or moments more than made up for it.

Yar was given such inconsistent and uneven moments in the show that it's no wonder Denise Crosby wanted to leave. :( There were some great moments, but the "What were the writers doing?!" moments like from "Justice" were far more the norm and it was unfortunate...

Worf, Odo, Tuvok, Nhan. HM:Yar

Reed’s contributions are more significant as armory officer/tactical officer. He gets overshadowed by both Major Hayes and T’Pol (due to her history working for the Vulcan Ministry of Security) in the security department.

STNG being my favourite series the number 1 pick would be Worf, but....
Have you ever felt that Worf, a big and maybe scary Klingon, was sometimes thrown around, shot or something like that by a baddie just to make the baddie seem dangerous?
Yes. It's like professional wrestling. Lots of guys were able to "throw around" Andre the Giant or the Iran Sheik in the ring to make them look tough, but they never could have done it in a match that was not fixed.

He's also the character who always proposes a bad idea first, so it can be rejected and a better idea can be implemented.

That is because they wanted to show that the Federation's sensibilities are often better than more aggressive solutions. It's an easy set up to use the "Klingon" security officer as the example of how not to problem solve.
