Reminded me, Thomas mentioned picking ships appropriate to the timeframe, so it's a shame it was too early to see this little fella:
It is curious that the reason for updating the ships in STO was because of the tie-in to Picard Season 2, and that one of the ships updated was the Yorktown-class variant of the Odyssey; the only one out of the variants that got updated too:
Well, only the designs they’ve used on screen. That does not mean that all STO designs are canon. I’m pleasantly surprised that they are using STO ships instead of all Eaglemoss CGI models, since they are showing new designs rather than just old ones. I’m curious about that Excelsior variant. Is that a STO ship too, or just a standard Excelsior with upgraded nacelles? And while I’ve never been a fan of the Odyssey class (especially as the Enterprise-F), I will say that the Yorktown refit does look better than the original design.
The Excelsior variant looks new, the only thing somewhat similar in STO is the neck, which looks a little like the Resolute's. And it can't be taken directly from that since it wasn't one of the ships updated:
I honestly don't like the ship Cgi of well.. Most of the new era .. They just look like fake cgi ships and way to dark.. That glow or lenses flare or something.. Just disappointed.. They can do good cgi.. The 09 Enterprise was gorgeously done.. Looked fantastic.. Owell
These are just background ships. They don’t need much detail. I’m guessing there will be more detailed designs for anything close-up, like the Stargazer.
Well, the galaxy, nebula have been in service since 2365.. It's 2400. 35 years. There will be refits, some major . the Connie refit occured 25 years after it was made. Been 25 years for the soverign .. It's up for a major refit .. No Aventine Vesta class yet? And Captain Dax? BOOOO!!
I'm thinking it may actually be the tricked-out Excelsior variant we saw last season in Lower Decks - the Obena Class. Its primary hull looks elongated in that same way. At least, it does to me... Whew... I'm going to be busy in the coming years with all these new ships...
The Obena had the side flared structures on the secondary hull that the Enterprise-B version had. This ship doesn't have those. So it's either yet another new class based on the Excelsior, or it's an actual Excelsior class with a new 25th century refit.
I think it's a refit of NCC-2000. The ship pops out of warp and the next thing we see is Raffi and USS Excelsior reporting for duty.
AH! Good point - forgot about that detail. Well, maybe the Obena has different subtypes, just like the Excelsior and E-B (and Lakota) are technically the same class, but have many more-than-just-superficial differences. Might be a while. They had the perfect opportunity to include that version in the latest Borg campaign and didn't. I was hoping to see it, like maybe floating around amongst the enemy fleet in "Hive Onslaught" or something, but nary a sighting.
It looks Naradaish to me! Which I guess is kind of Borg-ish if you take into account the apocryphal backstory of the Narada.
Based on the ship placards seen at Starfleet Academy, the Excelsior had gone out of service sometime in the 24th century. (I hope that they release close-ups of those so we can get a clear reading of the date for this.) This is supported by the existence of another Excelsior, with the registry NCC-21445, from "The Measure Of A Man".
As mentioned before, it might be a refit of the Excelsior NCC-21445, or it could simply be a brand new ship that just resembles the Excelsior and is also named the Excelsior. I'm hoping Doug will provide more info about it and the other ships.
