Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

I'm a week away from watching this (I think) cause I want to rewatch Season 1 first (7 to go) but that fleet looks offing magnificent!

That’s not an Akira directly behind the Stargazer, it’s a Reliant class (updated Miranda) from STO there’s a couple of them in the fleet. All the other Variants you pointed out, other than the excelsior, are STO designs.

The Nebula is the ‘Sutherland’ class, the Galaxy is the ‘Ross Class’. The ship directly below La Sirena is the Gagarin Class

That one I believe. The front view looks like it could be either.
You can tell from the shape of the roll bar. It’s curved, not angled. Plus you can see the glow from the secondary deflector on the saucer.

I’m on my phone, so it’s pretty easy just to zoom right in on the fly without having to use an editing program.

Slightly higher quality version of the fleet picture

So they saved money by using Star Trek Online ships? Those models aren't exactly TV quality, are they only seen at distance then?

Well they revamped a number of the STO ships in question a little while ago. I'm not sure if the new T6 model of the Reliant is available to players yet, some of the others are. It's speculation on my part, they might have made the game reworks from higher poly models that they then used for Picard, or as you say, they're just there for background ships.

The Stargazer is the first ship of its class. However, the class name might not be Stargazer-class.

In "Yesterday's Enterprise", the Enterprise was the first ship of the Galaxy-class Battleships launched in an alternate timeline.

Thomas said he updated them in celebration of their appearance in Picard. They’re not the show models. If the show models are in any way updated.

All of the reworks are live. They went live with the anniversary update in January. On PC at least.

So far they’re been shown at a distance and out of focus.

2 years ago when pre-production started up, David Blass saw some of the STO designs on Twitter and really liked them. So he brought cryptic on board. Two of the STO artists also helped design the Stargazer with Eaves and Drexler

I just wonder why SF would slightly change existing designs - are they all refits?

At least for the STO designs shown here, they aren’t refits, just new classes built on the ideas and advancements of the old. That’s the STO lore at least.
