Spoilers ST Discovery - Starships and Technology Season Four Discussion

4x09:

- So... Cloaking device. Was this mentioned prior? I guess one consequence of making peace with Romulus / Romulans no longer being a big power would be this. The only thing remaining would be getting over any Starfleet cultural hangups on the technology.

- So... shuttle-level cloaking device. But nothing new to Trek, really.

- And the shuttle is now in a more runabout-esque configuration. In its first appearance there was a single forward station and this time there are two. I called it then that the shuttle set could be configured to however many seats and stations as the plot needed...

- Book's ship has at least six torpedo tubes - for a ship THAT size? Even in the super-future, odd; but like so many other things there's very little context. I'll hazard to suggest that with the ship's configurability they'd almost NEED to have a tube in every axial direction to let it fire at any direction, or in a specific shape to bring multiple tubes to bear, which would be pretty cool.

- Discovery fires torpedoes, which are red. Not quantum, like Book's ship? When Discovery engaged in combat at the end of last season, pretty much all weapons fire was white IIRC.

They're probably microtorpedoes like a shuttle or runabout would carry. Unless the Tardis tech from that 31st century capsule is used to store torpedoes, and they get larger when fired - you could store thousands of them in a little shuttle XD

Federation/Starfleet moving back to land. A habitable planet with some cool headquarters; reminds me of Voyager episode: Nightingale
Janeway: Too bad we can't just keep the windows open

Or, its more likely that programmable matter simply makes as many torpedoes as are needed.
Say that Booker's ship has however many torpedo tubes and each is able to hold a few torpedoes... once you fire them, the ship can automatically build new ones.

Or, he could use replicators to manufacture more torpedoes on demand in combat.
Also, given Book's ship size (which is much larger than a runabout), it doesn't seem like it would depend on micro-torpedoes... but rather, existing/regular ones should be able to fit just fine.

So, 4x10:

- Visible vintage communication devices include early and late TNG-era combadges, a PIC-era badge, an ENT-era communicator plus translator pack, and translator from TOS "Arena" and "Metamorphosis". There's also a TOS communicator which MAY be swiped from the SNW set, as it's not the early DSC ones nor the classic TOS grille. What, so combadges made no other advances in the intervening centuries? Whose collection did they raid to get all these things anyway?

- Programmable antimatter can be stored, long-term, in little test tubes.

Weird- like bringing in a museum display to a meeting for illustrative purposes? Possibly it's no one's collection- you just tap the images you like on a communicator printer?

Heck, they could be a hardlight simulation or something. It's not as though anyone needed them to actually WORK for Kovich to make his point.

Or, Kovich is someone who has a peculiar affinity for historical items. He's not providing a direct lineage, any more than if I discuss the history of General Motors I am going to show the Oakland car line that was replaced by Pontiac. I'm just going to give a sense of historical scope to make my point.

I mean, I guess they coulda grabbed the TOS and ENT-era stuff so as to have items that would be recognizable to Saru and Burnham. Given that a couple were from the time after they left, but still in the same era, could be Kovich saying "eh, conjure up some stuff from the mid 23rd century, that'll be close enough for this two-second metaphor I'm going for".

Close enough is usually as it works.

Kovich is a historian - maybe they're from his collection, and his focus is 22nd-24th century, nothing later ;)

Given the nature of programmable matter, its possible 32nd century ships simply use it to create energy based weapon ports and torpedo tubes (along with torpedoes) wherever they might be needed on the ship... this would also explain lack of any visible weapon ports on most ships in the 32nd century (except for the Viridian/Osyraa's ship).
