I've known people on the internet to swear up and down that Kirk and Spock were more than just best friends...
That's called K/S, for "Kirk-Spock slash fiction." It goes back to early 1970s fanfic, long before the public Internet.

I know, but I was trying to express it delicately. I had in mind a woman I knew on Usenet once who slaughtered many electrons trying to "prove" that Kirk and Spock were lovers. That's called K/S, for "Kirk-Spock slash fiction." It goes back to early 1970s fanfic, long before the public Internet.
Were her initials LG? Because i remember someone like that as well and her single-mindedness on the subject was astounding. And she constantly changed her moniker to get around being kill-filed.I know, but I was trying to express it delicately. The first episode aired ManTrap had Uhura saying Kirk was Spock's only friend or something. It was great how the first lot of episodes established the characters especially ManTrap. The brother relationship was not developed during WNMHGB, Kirk's best friend on the ship was Gary Mitchell at that time. By the first episode of series (using production order), when facing destruction in The Corbomite Maneuver, Spock slips and calls Kirk "Jim" only once for the first time, hinting at a closer friendship with Kirk than simple the Captain-First Office relationship. During the same episode, McCoy calls Kirk "Jim" continuously throughout the episode implying that McCoy is Kirk's best friend on the ship, or maybe visa-versa in McCoy's mind. Kirk doesn't call McCoy by his nickname "Bones" until The Enemy Within suggesting that the friendship with McCoy has advanced more in Kirk's mind. In all events, I don't see evidence of a "brother" relationship between Kirk and Spock, yet.
I don't think there's any combination of characters in Star Trek that hasn't been tried out in FanFiction. The internet swears everyone is more than just friends.
Yes.Were her initials LG?

CREWMAN [OC]: Transporter room to Bridge. Landing party returning. They report one death.
SPOCK: Bridge acknowledging.
UHURA: I don't believe it.
SPOCK: Explain.
UHURA: You explain. That means that somebody is dead and you just sit there. It could be Captain Kirk. He's the closest thing you have to a friend.
SPOCK: Lieutenant, my demonstration of concern will not change what happened. The transporter room is very well-manned and they will call if they need my assistance.

Saying that wasn't Kirk Spock the first slash pairing or was it Homes and Watson?
How deep was the Friendship between kirk and Spock? I look forward to some replies.
About nine and a half inches.

To me its seems there is nothing but slash fanfiction out there. Not just Kirk/Spock but every combination of characters. Its really hard to find just friendship/action adventure fics but you know TOS is over 50 years old so maybe no-ones interested in writing boring non-romantic stories any more.Kirk/Spock was the first slash pairing to be called such. (Because of the slash between the names. The fic writers back then - or pioneers, as slash fic writer me likes to call them - inserted it to distinguish their fic from Kirk&Spock fic, which indicated friendship fic. So, they didn’t invent slash fic as such, but they did invent the NAME for it.)

If it were up to me I'd say Action/Adventure or Friendship, no romance at all - Kirk is too much of a player for that.To me there's too much het romance out there still... it's all a matter of perspective(but yeah Kirk/Spock is THE pairing for TOS indeed)
I will agree that gen fic is somewhat rarer than romantic (both het and slash) fic tho. I myself hardly ever write anything gen. It's not as... idk... interesting to me? I always say we had enough gen stuff on canonical Trek, I don't need to write about it in fan fic as well.
