Jadzia and Jake Sisko

What Did Jadzia think of Jake sisko the son of her friend Benjamin sisko? Would she have happily agreed to take care of Jake like her own son if Benjamin sisko asked her to do so in the event that he was killed on duty?

Given that we saw it happen, pretty obvious.

Had Jake still been underage, he probably would have returned to Joseph, since the latter would presumably have been designated as his guardian.

What I wonder is what happened to Starfleet orphans like Timothy from the Vico, or that kid in "The Bonding".

Jake would probably be sent to Ben Sisko's sister Judith or one of their other brothers. Joseph looks on the high side of 70, and I really wouldn't want to be raising a teenage son while I was in my 70s.

Jadzia would have looked after him like a big sister, and like Ben and Curzon, would have been Jake's drinking buddy and wingman, eventually hooking up with her good friend Ezri Tigan, or so my inner fanfic tells me.

Yes, but some parents have better support systems than others. For some kids, losing parents means Grandma and Grandpa take care of you, or Aunt Sophie, or your parents' best friends. For others, they get dropped into the foster care meat-grinder and stay there until they're 18.

In the 24th century you get the feeling that 70 is the new 50, but papa Sisko does have established medical issues.

Let's hope that the foster care system in the 24th century is a bit better than it is today.

Bruce Wayne had Alfred Pennyworth to raise him.

And Ezri/Jake would have been more interesting than Ezri/Bashir. I think the writers just figured that Julian deserved something after being dumped for a Ferengi.

Don't forget that's it's the 24th century version of 70, that's like 50 in our time.

It seems most of the time they are sent to live with family, Jeremy (the kid from Bonding) was sent to relatives. Those that don't have other family are probably placed in something like foster care.

Agreed!

Woah, using a female character to "award" a male character with a relationship because they "deserve something"...
That's extremely archaic writing.

We don't actually know how old he is in years, just that he looks about like a 70-year-old in the 21st century. We know he's not very good at taking his meds or seeing his doctor, which makes him not a good candidate for taking care of Jake - and Jake deserves better teen years that taking care of his grandfather.

No, it's sloppy word choice on my part, and I of all people should know that you can't be sloppy when addressing Trekkies. ;)

Better word choice would be that Bashir had been unlucky in love with Leeta, and deserved to find romance with someone.

I think "deserve" is a problematic concept when it comes to anything. In this same thread the word "deserve" was also used in connection with the possibility of teen Jake having to take care of his grandfather. Arguably, family relationships and responsibilities are not about what we deserve or not, either.

How about "it would be really nice if Julian could build that kind of positive, meaningful and special one-on-one personal connection with someone that goes beyond regular friendship." A lot of people really do have a deep-seated, profound emotional need for that in their lives, after all. And as an audience watching fictional people in a fictional narrative, it is satisfying to see them achieve that.

Trouble is, you want that for Jake, too.

While romance is certainly not about people as "prizes" to be won, it's not wrong to wish that a basically good person who was unlucky in love could see their fortunes change.
