George Perez reveals terminal cancer diagnosis

I just recently heard. Like many here...yup George's work was pretty much part of my comic book reading foundation. Great artist and great guy. Even though I gave up on comics 25 years ago I still have a soft spot for anything pre early 90's. George was at a convention here back 2016. Got my Crisis number 1 signed and a picture with him and a friend. He was an extremely nice guy. My buddy got him to do a sketch on a blank cover newer wonder woman book. I was dismayed after that year when George decided not to come back to states that were won by Trump. I was a bit miffed by this that he would not visit my State for at least 4 years. I was hoping this would be the year he came back this way. But sadly that seems out of the cards now.

Hero Initiative announced today that they're doing a limited, comic shop exclusive reprint of JLA/Avengers. There's 64 pages of additional content, and I wonder if it's the material from the Absolute Edition bonus book, which include Perez's original 1983 JLA/Avengers artwork from the cancelled crossover.

If you're interested, the Diamond order code you need for your comic shop is JAN228074.

Any idea what, if any, percentage of the profit might be going to George and/or his medical treatments?

I don't know, honestly. He's just entered hospice care. The proceeds are probably going to Hero initiative's health fund than to George personally, but that's just a guess on my part. I'll see if I can find out.

Just as a warning anyone who didn't go to the link, they're only printing 7,000 copies, so if you want it you're going to want to pre-order as soon as possible.
Just saw the news about Perez, and this is definitely gonna be a big loss for the comic book community. I haven't read any stuff he worked on yet, but I know he's a legend.

Duuuuuuude.

Well, I contacted my comic dealer, who ordered 20 copies overall, and I'm #5 on their list, so I got a fair chance of getting a copy.

Here's George being shown the cover for the new collection by DC's Editor-in-Chief Marie javins:

And Bleeding Cool has a quote giving George's reaction:

George Perez said:
I am so incredibly overjoyed to hear that my fanboy dream is going to be available to a whole new generation of comic book fans who weren't there when it was printed that many years ago. And it's wonderful that it's happening while I'm still alive to see it. Whatever it was that allowed this reprint to be released I am very grateful and on behalf of the fans all I can say is well done DC and Marvel! And of course, I am so elated that all profits from this re-print are going to one of my favorite personal charities!

I've pretty much sworn off physical books & comics, but I am very tempted to break my rule and see if there's any chance of one of my local comic shops getting me a copy. JLA/Avengers is probably the one out of print comic that I want to read the most, and while it's more money that I would usually spend on something like this, it is going to a good cause.

Bleeding Cool has given an update, and they've quoted George's Facebook as such:

George Perez's Facebook said:
Last week George was in a lot of pain and we discovered it was due to an issue with his gallbladder. This caused a very serious infection. The decision was made to treat this using antibiotics and a tube to decompress the gallbladder. This went well and he has recovered from the infection. However, in the days following the drain occluded, causing pain and leakage. This was a huge quality of life issue. He was admitted back to the hospital on Sunday and the drain was replaced today. He feels much better. George, Carol and his care team have made the decision for George to be enrolled in inpatient hospice. This doesn't mean death is imminent, it means he can spend his remaining time with his friends and family and his wife can spend this time just being with him. This is a joy for them both. To all who have sent well wishes and kind sentiments, George would like to express his sincerest and most heartfelt thanks. To those of you who have sent me letters through my email, George has and is receiving them.

Unfortunately, under these new circumstances, the CGC had to cancel the private signing. There's also a photo of former DC President Dan Didio visiting George at the hospital.

Very sorry to hear this.
Cancer sucks. The owner of a small menswear store in my area had to close up shop after nearly 40 years in business because his battle with cancer made it impossible to run the business anymore. A crowdfunding campaign was started to help with his medical expenses, but he passed away in a matter of months.
