Spoilers Lord of the Rings TV series

I mean technically he is around in this time, just not in Middle Earth (and not by that name.) But yeah it would be odd to have Gandalf show up in the second age given the whole point of his Order's mission was a reaction to how the second age ended.

Maybe the fire thing just has to do with someone using Narya? Or maybe there's a dragon involved somehow? Isn't Gil-galad supposed to have it at this point?
Yeah, Gil-galad had it first before passing it onto Círdan, who then gave it to Gandalf when he arrived in Middle-earth.

I don't remember the exact history of dragons offhand but I'm pretty sure they were more common in the Second Age (compared to the Third) so there's a chance we'll see one.

I believe the dwarven rings amplified greed and led to those wearing them accumulating vast treasure hordes which were then attacked/taken over by dragons so that would certainly fit with a showing dealing with the rings of power.

Some of the dwarven rings of power ended up melted by dragons.

Oh, yes! I could I forget that?! Yeah, about half of the dwarven rings were destroyed by dragons according to Gandalf.

I often wondered if the Dwarven rings were actually destroyed by dragonfire -- the One Ring, according to Gandalf, couldn't be, and the Ringcraft couldn't have been all that different -- or if they just lingered inside the dragons until they eventually died. For all we know, one of the Seven for the Dwarf Lords might have been inside Smaug when Bard killed him.

So how many of the characters that we know will be in this are Ringbearers?

With certainty? Galadriel, Gil-galad, eventually Elrond (Gil-galad also had Vilya), probably Durin IV. No names or stories were given to the Seven beyond generalities. Same for the Nine, honestly, other than becoming the Nazgûl and knowing some of the deeds of the Witch-king of Angmar after he was turned.

It is so nice that people here can talk about the upcoming show calmly and intelligently. Sorry if some of what I have to say has been talked about already but I don’t have time at the moment to read the entire thread.

The shit has hit the fan on many other sites with complaints about various aspects about the series.
One of these is that there will be a female dwarf without a beard. My solution to this is maybe she-elves don’t grow beards until a certain age (???!!!)
There are also complaints about POC playing roles in the movie such as an occasionally elf.
They also do not like that Elrond has short hair in the teaser. There must be some reason for that which might be explained in the show.

I do have some problems with the compression of the time period but I can understand that they do not want to replace the human characters each season.

Do they say somewhere in the books that dwarf women have beards? I know there's the line about them in the movie, but I had always assumed that was just a joke that the movie Peter Jackson & Co. made up themselves.
As for the POC cast members, these days you really can't get away with having an all white cast in a big show like this.
And, I know this is hard for people to believe, but it's not unusual for people to change hairstyles from time to time.

Thanks. I'm a little surprised we don't know more about the men who became Nazgul. With them such a big part of the story, I would have expected to have gotten backstories for them.

Do they say somewhere in the books that dwarf women have beards?

Return of the King says:"[Dwarf-women] are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other people cannot tell them apart."

Silmarillion says: "For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls"

So, per Tolkien, lady dwarves look and sound like the men, and both have beards from birth, they dress differently when underground, and the dress same as the men on the rare occasions they go above ground.

However the show doesn't have the rights to the Silmarillion, but they can (apparently) get permission to use Silmarillion info on a case be case basis.

Thanks for the info. I have not read the Silmarillion so did not know that about the dwarves. It seems my theory about dwarves not have beards when they are young will not work.

However I think some people are being rather petty not to accept such a small change.

They did that sort of in The Hobbit films.

They gave them thinner beards correct? I should note that most people missed the lamb chop sideburns on our new dwarf princess. So she does have some kind of facial hair, it's just very hard to see in that picture.

^^^ I am wondering about that too. I saw The Hobbit movies in the cinema but have not watched them since so I am drawing a blank on the dwarf women.

They did.
I'm having a brain fart, when did we see dwarf women in The Hobbit?

It is very brief at the opening of the film in Erebor before Smaug's attack.

OK, I must have missed them then.
EDIT: I found at least one woman when I watched the scene on Youtube, and made a GIF for anyone else who might have missed her when they saw the movie.

Yeah, people say Star Wars fans are the worst for this kind of thing, but they don't hold a candle to the Tolkien die-hards. I remember when the original movies came out every damn day on some forums, some fan was loosing their shit over some tiny detail or another not being book accurate. I few of them were still decrying Peter Jackson and predicting the movie's totally financial failure . . . right up until they swept the Oscars.

So yeah, I can imagine brown people and more than two people with vaginas involved would throw them for a loop.
