Why should we trust anyone other than the Zuckers with a Police Squad! reboot? Who but them could possibly understand?
When you start trusting non-Zuckers to take over for them...you get stuff like Airplane II.

Tis not only strikes me as a very bad idea, but may distract him from getting season 4 of The Orville going.

Night Court had a similar sense of humor as Police Squad. But no Leslie Nielsen, is a deal breaker for a Police Squad remake.
Night Court could be zany, but I'd consider it far too grounded to be in the Police Squad genre. It had coherent stories and everything.
No, Night Court had nowhere near as many sight gags and most of the actors were whimsical or sarcastic. They didn't play the comedy "straight." The show was more like the courthouse version of "Barney Miller."

I found this 'M Squad'/'Police Squad' mash-up on YouTube. I knew that 'Polce Squad' borrowed heavily from 'M Squad, but I didn't realize the first episode was another wholesale remake of an 'M Squad' episode similar to how 'Airplane!' is almost a shot for shot remake of 'Zero Hour'. Also, I thought Leslie Nielsen getting out of his squad car and getting shot at was just a funny visual gag. Turns out it's in the 'M Squad' opening as well.

Angie Tribecca was a really funny show. Which is another example of why this can work. I think people are selling McFarlande short if they don't think he can make this work. It's true this might not have the same style as the old show and movies but I am sure it will still be a spoof and very funny.
Or it could end up like the Steve Martin Pink Panther movies. Steve Martin is a good actor in general, but he's no Peter Sellers when it comes to playing Clouseau and the resulting movies are rather forgettable.
I agree Airplane II: The Sequel is NOWHERE NEAR as funny as Airplane!, I still enjoy watching it every so often. The aforementioned DANGER VACUUM scene cracks me up every time. I also love William Shatner as Commander Buck Murdock and his breakdown over why there's so many lights and knobs and buttons and flashing that do absolutely nothing. Also: "There's no tower." "No tower?" "Only a bridge, sir." "WHY THE HELL DOESN'T ANYBODY NOTIFY ME ABOUT THESE THINGS?"
Not to mention the fact it uses the Battlestar Galactica theme.Going back to the Police Squad reboot, I've actually never watched the show, but I absolutely love the Naked Gun movies. I also think Seth MacFarlane can do it justice and think Liam Neeson would be an inspired choice for Frank Drebin. As long as they keep him playing it straight while a bunch of goofy shit goes on around him, I think it'll be good.
Edit: I'm trying to think of serious actors who could play Frank Drebin. Could you imagine if someone who only does intense drama like Daniel Day Lewis doing something like this? I think i'd be interesting (if he'd even think of "slumming" it and doing comedy
)

Series Frank Drebin was perfect because he didn't seem to actually notice the wackiness going on around him. Movie Frank Drebin interacted more with the craziness, but still played it about 95% straight.
Saul Tigh started BSG as a drunken asshole and evolved into a hungover curmudgeon. He never once had the air of someone who didn't notice what was transpiring around him. Of course he noticed. That's why he drank!
Michael Hogan may be a good enough actor to carry the role, not because of any similarity between Saul Tigh and Frank Drebin.

I loved Angie Tribeca, but it seemed to survive on pure luck and TBS' lack of other original shows at that point. There may not be much of an audience for that kind of humor right now.

I mentioned the remake to one of my mates (particularly with regards to Liam Neeson). He can't see it, but I think if they keep Neeson as the straight man while chaos reigns around him, it'll work.

If you think about it, this is exactly why Leslie Nielsen was so good. He'd previous been a serious actor and then the turn to comedy made him a phenom. Probably changed his life. I think they're trying to do the same thing by casting Neeson, and it could work quite well. We'll see.
Another that could potentiall work would be Tom Selleck. Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent would have been good several years earlier, but he's a bit too old now.
Neeson will certainly being playing the straight man. Lets not forget Leslie Nielsen started off as a dramatic actor so I think people are not respecting Neeson's ability to do this enough. In fact if their is one scene I think they might go for it will be this from Ted 2.
Yeah, I mentioned this above. I mean, the man was in Forbidden Planet. I think they're trying out the same effect with Neeson, an actor who's mostly been doing dramatic roles.
I’m all for a Police Squad movie but Seth McFarlane’s sensibilities are just wrong for it.
