What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I'm torn on Mirror Georgiou. She was one of the more interesting characters and I liked how she grew to use her sharp tongue as an outlet for her evil impulses instead of just sharp knives, but making her the emperor made me feel like the writers just weren't taking the show seriously enough. They could've made her an evil admiral, that would've made total sense, but they just had to take it five steps too far and make her the most important person in the known galaxy.

(I'm not keen Regent Worf either, but at least Regular Worf had some ties to the High Council so it didn't feel like too much of a stretch).

The best material with Mirror Georgiou was after she got to the 32nd century and was being interrogated by Kovich.

The eye-blinking stupidity aside, of course.

Perhaps they threw in the eye-blinking stupidity because they were worried the scene was making the rest of the episode seem worse by comparison.

The problem I had with the eye-blinking is that she's taking advantage of a pretty catastrophic bug that apparently hasn't been fixed for 900 years.

And that is my Number 1 issue with it. It's not that holograms can be short-circuited by external means it's that a woman from a parallel universe and from more than 900 years in the past can easily defeat them using knowledge from her own time. That's like a futuristic spaceship having its engine deactivated by some guy from the 20th century jamming a banana up a tail pipe.

As a wise man once said; “The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.”

Okay, I'll play, too.

Sisko vs Janeway: As talented as Mulgrew is, I still have to give it to Sisko. (And Avery Brooks is a strong actor, anyway.) Of all the franchise captains, he was the most layered and grew the most. I tried to not let my bias of him being my favorite not get in the way, but even without bias, on paper he experienced the most growth and change, plus he was consistent. Janeway was far too uneven... a fault of the writers, not her.

Kira vs Chakotay: Kira wins. This is even a question?

O'Brien vs B'Elanna: O'Brien is my favorite engineer (only slightly edges out Scotty), but B'Elanna wins because she got more growth. O'Brien had the same advantage as Worf, just on a smaller scale. B'Elanna had to start from scratch.

Odo vs Tuvok: Possibly the most even matchup due to their role and both actors' abilities and talent. But I have to give it to Odo because he had quite a character journey.

Quark vs Neelix: Neelix is severely underrated, and was underutilized. Quark deserves far more credit than being the comic relief, because Shimerman brought a LOT of depth and nuance to Quark. Both actors really were fantastic in their roles and both characters served their functions well, but Quark wins overall because I feel his journey was more turbulent.

Bashir vs The Doctor: I feel Bashir is a better doctor, but The Doctor wins here because he was literally a blank slate when the series began. Due in large part to Robert Picardo, The Doctor is simply unforgettable.

Jadzia vs Kim: Jadzia wins. Kim was pretty static for the entire series, while Jadzia had good growth in 6 years.

Worf vs Seven: This is actually tougher than it appears. I think I will give the win to Seven, simply because she only had 4 years of episodes to grow in, while Worf had 11.

Ezri vs Kes: Kes had more potential, but Ezri wins because not only did the writers give her more attention in 1 year than Kes got in 3, but DeBoer is a stronger actress than Lien.

Jake vs Paris: I find myself surprised at how difficult it is to choose between these two. We literally watch Jake grow up, and he was just a regular person who carved his own path that was not Starfleet, like his dad. Paris had a great redemption arc, earning respect among the crew, and finding love and getting married and becoming a dad in the finale. I will give this one to Jake, because ALL the scenes between him and Ben were just special.

Total wins...
DS9: 7 (Sisko, Kira, Quark, Odo, Jadzia, Ezri, Jake)
VGR: 3 (The Doctor, Seven, B'Elanna)

As for secondary/recurring characters, DS9 completely outshines ALL other shows. There is simply no contest there.

The Final Frontier isn't even the second-worst Trek film.
Can you unpack that a bit more? It's just sort of... sitting there...

But with Science Fiction like Star Trek and the Foundation books that claims to be the utopian (or at least technologically and societally advanced) future, then I have trouble stomaching when people behave like in the 1940s/1960s.
I read all my Asimov when I was pretty young. I hadn't thought about it until you posted, but I probably wouldn't enjoy it now.

I wish they’d really sell the heck out of it. It’s a high-quality product. I can’t get my kids to watch much that isn’t YouTube…but they watch this faithfully every Thursday with me. I think it would appeal to a broad audience.

And, my boys are already asking me about VOY so they can see “Real Janeway”
HELL YES!

I can't agree about Into Darkness, but honestly I would be more inclined to revisit almost all of the TOS films before Nemesis or Insurrection. Even Generations fails to garner enough interest to draw me back in for another viewing. The Final Frontier and Into Darkness both have the strength of actually being engaging and enjoyable in several character moments, even if the overall film is weaker in places.

I may have mentioned this before, but would watch TFF on a constant loop forever rather than sit through TMP one more time.

:ack:

In the spirit of re-iterating things we’ve said to support TFF…I’d honestly put that movie in the top half of franchise films.

Better than most of the TNG films (FC is the only challenger), most of the Kelvin films (BEY and ID) and a couple of the TOS movies.

TFF has heart and real chemistry, plus a superb bad guy who really isn't a bad guy. I know he opened the door to Spock's family spilling out undisclosed siblings like a busted bubble gum machine but hey, Laurence Luckinbill delivered the best performance in the film.
