What if there was a novel about a Borg cube doing borg things?

Garak234

It sounds like the most bland book but would it be so unusual in terms of modern entertainment that it would actually work and create new forms of Trek novel themes and devices and such?

The short story "The Trouble with Borg Tribbles" by William Leisner from Strange New Worlds V is told from the perspective of the Borg. But I don't see how it could work as a novel-length story.

A novel about Borg, doing Borg things, from a Borg point of view?

EEEEEEEEWWWWWWW!!! GGGGGRRRRRROSSSSSS!!!!!!!
:barf::barf:

(And definitely not Swedish! Or Norwegian. Or Danish. Or Icelandic.)

I'm pretty sure there've been brief portions of novels that told things from a Borg POV, though I'm not readily recalling which ones.

Assimilate
Regenerate
Repeat

Well I like the Borg as an antagonist in small doses, and I've done some rudimentary thought experiments. I would buy such a book, actually.

I can already formulate some questions to try and make it workable, such as which themes, what previous Star Trek novels can give some guiding direction and inspiration; whether to parallel or go in the opposite direction.

It would be a simple matter of sitting down, asking the questions and writing out the answers, and then formulating a story that addresses those questions.

It sounds like something you should write, @Garak234. Maybe you already have some thoughts about what direction you would take such a project? It might be something that you would want to hash out in the fan fiction area of the forum? I would be interested in bouncing ideas back and forth.

I don't know that we'll ever actually see a book like this as an official published tie-in, though. Posting it as a topic in this forum makes it problematic as a viable concept though, I think. Be very cautious with the ideas that you really like, and would genuinely like to see as a real possiblity.

Wouldn't it be the Borg Cube/Lower Decks gag expanded to an entire novel?

Which featured almost zero content and I can't for the life of me imagine a Borg POV working?

This is starting to turn into a thread that belongs in Fan Fiction rather than Trek Lit, where proposing specific story ideas is off-limits.

Arguably, I agree. But from a third party, no vested opinions perspective, these ST lit fans are hungry for more and whelp, overall, 2022----> crickets. Before you blast me away, verbally speaking lol, I'm sure there is much more to it--but this is what fans (I guess?) are resorting to and in the wrong forum nonetheless lol. Favorite C. Bennett title--> 'The Face of the Unknown'

It has to do with legalities. For example, if one were to post a story idea here in the Trek Lit forum that is similar to a novel one of the Trek authors here were writing or planning on proposing, then they can no longer legally have that novel published.

Not precisely "can no longer legally have that novel published," but the publisher (and probably also the author) would almost certainly consider risk of a plagiarism lawsuit unacceptably high, even if the author didn't, no matter how many affidavits the poster swore out, irrevocably disavowing any ownership of the idea. And so the proverbial plug would almost certainly be pulled.

If I post anything here that would have even the slightest risk of being construed as a "story idea," I do so in spoiler tags, and if that risk is non-trivial, then I don't post it at all.

That said, if the mere existence of this thread permanently eliminates any possibility of a Borg-POV "novel about a Borg cube doing Borg things" ever being published (which it probably hasn't; it's just not specific enough), then it has accomplished something worthwhile.

I would think that "I would like to see a story about the Borg from their perspective" would be too vague to be considered a story idea. As far as I can tell, no one has mentioned anything specific to this point. @Desert Kris presented some questions about thinking about a scenario, but their post doesn't contain any story ideas, and they also correctly point out that if the OP wished to respond to any of the questions, they should do so in Fan Fiction.

So I would think that as long as the thread continues to be about the viability of a Borg-based book, and we continue to avoid anything specific (and thank you for avoiding such specifics so far in the thread), then the thread should be OK to continue here.

Not so far. I was just concerned it might be heading that way, so a reminder was warranted.

Anyway, I doubt it's a viable idea, since stories are about characters and their interaction, and the entire Borg Collective is only one mind, generally personified through the Queen. A story "from the Borg's perspective" would just be the internal monologue of the Collective/Queen. There have been portions of novels that have given us that, such as Engines of Destiny. But an entire novel from that perspective would probably wear thin pretty fast.

It would have to be a cross-over, with ALIEN, as the xenomorph harvests Borg drones, who don’t react to predation…and one Queen faces off against another

Now THAT might be specific enough to prevent the premise of this thread from ever happening. :)

I mean, yes, come on @publiusr , we just talked about that. I have put your post behind a spoiler tag, just in case. And to be totally honest, I don't really even know if that is sufficient to prevent it being a problem... the general rule of thumb is just don't post them. A great way to ensure a story you want to see never gets made is to post about it in detail here.

Not that this specific idea probably had much of a chance of being made anyway, but better safe than sorry.

Wait, you made @publiusr use spoiler tags for a crossover idea he had that doesn't have rat's ass chance of actually being made? How is that fair?
