DC's "Naomi" coming to CW from Ava Duvernay

Hated it.

She said "the Superman thing" 5 times.

I'm only 90 percent sure that this is a world without Superman.

One guy said that Superman is fictional, but the world didn't go apeshit when Superman beat up a Ronin the Accuser?

I'm suddenly remembering that Superboy Prime came from a wold without Superman.

 

Naomi had me at her ringtone.

 

It was okay, but I'm not entirely sold yet. They're focusing on establishing the characters and setting and laying groundwork for the mystery slowly, so it's hard to tell where it's going. The lead is reasonably appealing, and the other characters are mostly okay, but the best friend is a bit of a cliched "snarky best friend" type. Also, the guy wanting the Elrond code name in the break-in was kind of a caricature, and I didn't remember seeing him before that sequence, so where did he come from?

Also, really? Teens today don't remember Lord of the Rings? I remember it being popular from the 1960s through well after the movies came out -- hard to believe it's been completely forgotten so quickly.

When Naomi asked her parents about her glasses and her adoption, their answers seemed too carefully rehearsed, and the way her father "reminded" her of her own medical condition that she should've known about all along felt like he was trying to reinforce brainwashing or prevent repressed memories from awakening. It seems pretty clear that her parents know who/what she really is and are her handlers or something like that.

Given all the property damage the fight caused in the town, wouldn't the police have come after Dee once he confessed publicly to being behind the stunt?

Also, Naomi boasts at the beginning that she has one of the most popular Superman websites in the world, and then when she confronts the sinister guy in the woods, she asks, "How do you know about my website?" Huh?

 

I liked this pilot and am interested to see where it goes and if it is actually set on the Arrowverse’s Earth Prime or a different earth like Stargirl. Seems weird if it is on Earth Prime that Superman (and Supergirl) is an urban legend or rumour, but maybe there’s an explanation other than being an alternate Earth.

I think it's self-evident that, as with Stargirl, this is set on its own Earth, but it's possible that whatever alternate world Superman and the others -- and probably Naomi herself -- came from will turn out to be Earth-Prime.

 

^ There are two issues with that idea:
1) There's zero evidence that the series exists within the Arrowverse's internal Multiverse

2) We already know that the Superman who exists in the series' world isn't Tyler Hoechlin's Superman

 

If there was a world where there were jet packs capable of doing things like this, well, it would be a very different world from ours. People would probably use them for commuting! Or at least the army and law enforcement would use them. Shouldn't this be enough to make the protagonist a little more suspicious?

 

Not necessarily. It was a fairly brief fight, lasting less than a minute, so it could've been a jet pack with a limited fuel supply, only capable of pulling off a brief stunt performance, like the jet packs we actually do have in the real world. Heck, we've had functioning jet packs like that for over half a century -- they used them in Thunderball and Lost in Space in the '60s.

The only implausible thing is that the jets/nozzles would've been visible, but people could assume they were hidden under the Superman actor's cape. People are good at rationalizing things like that, since a compact, concealable jet pack would be easier to believe than a fictional superhero coming to life.

I have no experience/knowledge really of the character's personal comics.

But her world feels artificial. I got a real Truman Show kinda vibe about how people interact with her. Everyone seems to like her regardless of school cliques. Her parents seem overly nice and forgiving.

 

Oh, that's an interesting observation. I could tell her parents were up to something, but it didn't occur to me that the others might be in on it too.

 

Yea her parents def know something. Her group of friends is extremely diverse, the kind of varied interests which probably don't intersect in a real school situation, but could just be for TV purposes. But going through the town and waving and like everyone knowing her, at the party different people all liking her... It just felt off.

May just be unrealistic TV writing and I'm reading too much into it. The reactions aren't too far fetched from those bottle episodes where you see a character in a coma, or a VR sim and they're being shown some kind of 'ideal' life. I don't know if her powers emit some kind of 'aura' that causes others to like her or something which could explain some too I suppose.

 

What a weird show to have after Superman and Lois. They went in saying that Superman isn’t real but I just saw him an hour earlier.
Also, if she was a real Superman fan, she would be demanding MoS 2 with Cavill like everyone else.

I wasn’t really a fan. The main character seems too nice of a lady. It’s creepy. Story didn’t seem that exciting as well. I’ll probably be skipping it.
Was that Sarah Cushing she was debating with? It sure looked like her.

 

IMDB is CRUSHING this show. 4.3/10 joining "great" hits like batwoman which has 3.4 (one of the lowest rated shows of ALL TIME).

IMDB is just a bunch of hate reviewers to anything perceived as “woke” right now (especially with respects to genre media). Oh, the main character is a black woman who is bi? 1/10

If the Mandalorian starred a gay black woman, it would also be rated a 4/10

 

Will Disney ever test that theory?

 

Discovery is pretty "woke"... and its still at a respectable 7.1 on IMDB.
