It’s actually the U.S.S. Kobayashi Maru from the 2009 J.J. Abrams film (which STO then subsequently used):

Then again, going from what Memory Alpha says, the design of the Kelvin Timeline-version of the ship by John Eaves and Alex Jaeger was based upon the 1983 fandom-blueprints (which I still have), as well as upon the basic design of the ship as seen on the cover of the 1989 "L.A. Graf" novel, so that's rather interesting.

the 1989 novel was by one member of the "L.A. Graf" collective, Julia Ecklar - and the ship on the cover of that novel was not the same one - it was lifted from The Spaceflight Chronology

Actually it isn't quite. The USS Kobayashi Maru in the 2009 movie had an engineering hull down the centre of the saucer. Some of the earliest concept art and many fan-made recreations based on it lack that, and this appears to be based on that earlier concept art.

Definitely -- that's why I mentioned "basic design," there, not the actual full design. It's very rough, but the influence is there. (Was going to post that cover-image also, but got too lazy last night.)

Ah, gotcha -- thanks. I did a quick side-by-side comparison of that shot from the 2009 movie with the one seen in STO, but didn't catch that.

It's not at all influenced - or the same basic design - the cover artist picked a random, unrelated ship — the Tritium class i believe —out of the Spaceflight Chronology and put it on the cover.

And then this influenced later choices. Including the old Starfleet Academy game I think. The books were read as part of the research for JJTrek. It’s on the record.

    You're not quite getting it.
The mistaken use of the Tritium class design on the cover of Julia Ecklar's Kobayashi Maru did NOT influence JJ Trek or any other uses - in JJ Trek the Kobayashi Maru was the ship from the fan-made blueprints, which does not bear any similarity to the Tritium class

According to the Spaceflight Chronology, the Tritium class was an experimental starship that was never put into service. it was a geometric main hull with three warp nacelles, connected to each other with additional struts (the third only apparently connected to the other two nacelles and not the main body). it never had any association with the Kobayashi Maru except for being pictured on the novel

The fan-made design that was later adopted by canon is a saucer with two nacelles and two additional outboard hulls. with the exception that they were both starships with more than one nacelle they had no other "basic design" in common. this is the design that influenced later works such as JJ's Trek, STO and The Romulan War.[IMG]

Eaves redesigned one of his Kelvin KM conepts a few years ago to look more Prime Timeline'ish. (and look at that, no negative space)

Eaves is a designer on Prodigy, so he may have designed that one as well.

@Leto_II, you were asking what the "real" Kobayashi Maru looks like?

In the Martin/Mangels ENT novel, it's a Klingon cargo ship crewed by humans. Linky

(Humans who are not very nice people, IIRC... )

At the time I hated that novel for taking THIS fan blueprint set and awkwardly squishing the backstory from April-era to Archer-era. The idea of the KM being a Klingon ship didn't make sense in the novel's backstory since first contact with the Klingons was only 4 years prior...

And for what it's worth, THIS is the Kobayashi Maru blueprint set that inspired the 2009 version of the ship.

Okay so who established anything about Uhura's backstory? Because this is her new canon one.

I recall World Without End giving her a long-lost father on a Dyson Sphere and the IDW Star Trek Ongoing having Kelvinverse Uhura just save her family from a shuttle disaster.

Practically no one, looking at Memory Beta.

According to The Starless World her father disappeared shortly before the entered the Academy, and her mother is alive during Shadows of the Indignant and The Slaver Weapon, but that's about it.

Hmm. Reckon they might get NN to play her own grandmother as it were? That would be kinda cool.

I recall that was offered to her in 2009 and she declined. Also, Nichelle's health and conservatorship status suggests to be it won't happen.

I think it was that she wanted to do it for 09 Trek, but the Writer’s Strike prevented the chance to actually write and incorporate anything into the script.

But yeah, her health at this point, I believe, precludes her actually doing any proper acting at this point, saying nothing of her situation with the conservatorship.

If they couldn't get her to voice Uhura in Prodigy...

Speaking of Prodigy, it's nice we've gotten some datelocks in the episodes over the last few weeks. Prodigy, early 2384, about ~3.5 years after Lower Decks, just over 6 years after "Endgame", and 15 years before Picard. Also, just 3-4 years before the Romulan sun will go. I wonder if the show goes on long enough if they might tie in or at least reference the tragedy or the evacuation efforts or something.
