TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

Sounds like they should have tackled this project first. So that both 4k-remastered TWOK and the theatrical version of TMP could benefit from the DE's 65mm recompositing.
While theoretically possible, they probably wouldn't have. The original TMP DE DVD came out before the TWOK DE DVD way back when, and they didn't swap in the fixed drydock shot, or any of the cleaned up stock footage.
No, the theatrical version of TMP came out in 4K earlier this year. Paramount doesn't plan to "disappear" it.
It's done. It's out! Essentially a 4K of the workprint that premiered (rushed to almost-complete) for the 1979 premiere.
Just finish the TV version effects that wern't finished, and leave it alone.
No, that's the "Special Longer Version", made without Robert Wise's participation. He did not approve it.
For the 2001 "Director's Edition" DVD, though, Wise and his team selected a few scenes that had been added to the SLV, and tweaked the theatrical to complete the scenes that Wise was dissatisfied with. Unfortunately, it was rendered only to DVD quality. This time, the same team (without the deceased Wise) is reassembling all the elements for 4K.
So that is what's coming to Paramount+ in 2022.
Paramount proceeded with its own 4K of TMP's theatrical without the DE Team's knowledge. I think, perhaps assuming the window of interest and commercial possibilities for the DE had passed? But the DE Team continued to champion the "DE in 4K" project. And - despite Covid curve-balls - finally succeeded in winning Paramount over.

The Lucas thing is to constantly adjust stuff.. Like the now different probe energy ball..
...ok. We have a different looking energy ball that's more in line with the energy balls used to attack the Klingons and the Enterpries from earlier. Makes sense to me.
The question is was that originally intended or were they originally meant to have them look different?
I'm very relaxed about any changes from the DVD version. I know they weren't able to do everything they wanted due to the budget available back in 2000, and there were still further changes Robert Wise would like to have seen. Possibly we'll get some of those now. I trust the team to do it well.
Yeah, it doesn't bother me at all. I still own a fantastic-looking version of the theatrical release on 4K disk. I can watch that any time I like, unlike Star Wars fans who basically just get stuck with the revised versions whether they like them or not.
Hey, I'm hoping that we get a brand new 'Redirecting The Future Part II: The Wrath of 4K' documentary where the entire team talks about coming back after 20 years and what they're able to do with this new edition that they couldn't have done before. Ever since the initial release of the Director's Edition, the team has talked on and off about what they wanted to do and what Wise would have liked to have seen done that they simply couldn't at the time.
The biggest one? The Officer's Lounge. Daren actually did some rough mock-ups of how he would have touched up the Officer's Lounge to make it look like the lounge below the bridge with windows showing both warp nacelles.
The probe energy ball is unchanged in the 4K theatrical.
It's not just that he was constantly adjusting stuff. It's that the adjustments weren't well considered (e.g., using CGI before it was good enough to look better than traditional methods); many of the changes amounted to pointless distractions that didn't improve the movies or actually made them worse; and then tried to completely eliminate the original versions such that only the changed versions could be seen/obtained. It's all those things combined (particularly the last) that brought Lucas well-deserved ire.
The Decker Unit can be... digitally diminished, right?

I hope when its released, all the special features from previous editions will be included, including the documentary, I think its called something like 'Road to the Motion Picture' from the 50th Anniversary box set. I also hope that Star Treks 5 & 6 will be released on Blu-Ray soon ala the recent releases of the first four including the DC of 6 (I'd of course love a DC of 5 but I think that's not going to happen).
I want the theatrical version of VI as well. In original 2.35 aspect ratio. The director's cut can remain 2.00 (or whatever it was) if he really must.
Pretty sure the theatrical release of TUC has been released on Blu-ray.
