What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

There's a lot of questionable and even dumb stuff in the movie for sure but when we get to Spock screaming "KHAAAAAAAN" we've basically jumped the shark, put a pair of X-ray glasses on it and then asked it to sing karaoke. That film is just an example of how not to finish a Star Trek movie.

This is the strangest film in the entire franchise for me, in that the first 3/4 are wildly fun and entertaining (and even poignant-- Pike's death and Kirk's sacrifice scene are amazing)...and then suddenly Spock yells "KHAAAAAAAN" and we get what feels like 25 min straight of punching people in the face over and over again and images of dizzying mass destruction and chaos while my head starts to throb and I get nauseous and dizzy. It's like a 4-star hour and a half followed by a zero-star 30 min ending. It's unfathomable how schizo it makes this movie feel. I'd rather watch Star Trek: Insurrection than the last act of ID. It's really that bad.

...and yet Jennifer on Lower Decks seems pretty comfortable as an Andorian on a Starfleet Ship. Nor do any of the many Vulcans we see ever complain of the cold.
In general the crews seen on Lower Decks, especially when it comes to background extras, seems a lot more diverse.

I think the environmental excuse is a pretty good fit for the TOS era and before. Diversity is not just in appearance, but we can presume that the Oxygen/Nitrogen count can be adjusted and other factors come into play so as not to slowly poison or discomfort large swathes of people.

By the TNG era, and perhaps even Movies era, most of these concerns are addressed. Potential explanations could be that human population has exploded to the trillions with thousands of colonies, whereas strict population control is the norm elsewhere, such as on Vulcan, or even negative growth on Andoria.

I also presume that Vulcans and Andorians are hardy species, able to withstand extreme temperature changes.

How's this for a controversial opinion:

I'm getting kind of tired of all the Adira/Gray stuff on DSC. All those two ever do is just stand around and stare longingly at each other. Even though Gray kind of looks like a ninja now (so maybe he'll actually have a function in the plot), he's still a dork.

When Adira isn't with Gray, shit gets done. Gray turns up, he sucks all the energy out of the scene; it's like TICK. (5-minute pause) TOCK. (5-minute pause) TICK.

Edit: Counting down until somebody replies to this post using words that end in "phobic"...

You summed it up pretty well. My biggest issue before the final act was Cumberbatch as Khan and the whole John Harrison identity. Then EVERYTHING became an issue.

Complaining is illogical. And we have seen/heard of all Vulcan ships in starfleet multiple times, so they do seem to have at least some preference for non-mixed crews for some reason.

I also recall humans and cardassians complaining about each other's preferred climate. And we've seen people who needed/preferred their quarters be different from the rest of the ship, which may not be possible on every ship (the Cerritos' bunk beds, for example).

And yet both Tuvok and T'Pol were quite fond of pointing out every other thing that annoyed them.

If we go back to the idea of Starfleet being the Federation's fleet, and other members having their own "state" fleet, it makes sense that that Vulcans have their own ships still.

Don't humans have various tolerances for temperature?

Yes?

So maybe Tuvok and T'Pol liked it cooler than most Vulcans.

And I was talking about all Vulcan ships in Starfleet, not in the Vulcan fleet. They already have their own separate ships outside of Starfleet.

Clearly at some point Vulcans made nasal inhibitor injections or technology standard for their own people who served with humans since Spock and Tuvok never complained about how humans smelled. Or Vulcans just got over most of their prejudices and nasty comments about another sentient, warp-capable civilization and learned to live with how we smell.

Exactly. Preferences abound, but not everyone is going to like it the same. So some Vulcans might be OK with the general atmosphere of Starfleet ships (what Spock describes as cold, sterile and artificially controlled) but they might be more the outliers than the general population.

I just find it easier to say "the makeup is expensive and time consuming for background extras". Especially now that they went more diverse in Lower Decks (and arguably Discovery too, from what I've seen)

She's barely had any lines, though. Mind you, I don't necessarily agree with the idea that Andorians must like the cold, but I wouldn't take the lack of scenes of Jennifer Sh'reyan complaining about it being too warm as indication that there's no problem either.

I wouldn't say no Vulcan ever complained about the temperature. Re: The Deadly Years;

SPOCK: Doctor, the ship's temperature is increasingly uncomfortable for me. I've adjusted the environment in my quarters to one hundred twenty five degrees, which is at least tolerable. However, I
MCCOY: Well, I see I'm not going to be making any house calls on you.

I find Adira/Gray scenes pretty cringey, myself. The constant mugging/smiling. Before I too get labeled some -phobic, I find the Neelix/Kes scenes in Voy I am rewatching also pretty cringey.

No, it’s not anything phobic….it’s just a grating plot line these past two seasons involving two characters who don’t fit into the storyline. I find it immensely annoying. Nothing against the actors…it’s just the characters suck and their relationship is extraordinarily uninteresting.

I’d much rather the writing team spend their “relationship energy” on Culber and Stamets. Book and Burnham is tolerable but disposable. Gray and Adira is awful.

Culber and Stamets really went away, didn’t it?

It feels like the producers made their point (of which I’m in favor): Trek has a gay couple and it’s not a big deal. Then they killed Culber, undid that wrong and then after that …. Movin’ on.

(Good on Trek for advancing causes; I’m ever indebted for Janeway as a female Capt in the 90s. My daughter still has her signed picture.)

But the trans/nonbinary couple seems much more inorganic to the show, and now they don’t know what to do with them other than grinning at each other. Maybe the writers will really surprise me, who knows.
