Star Trek Magazine Celebrates 15 Years of DS9!!!

Looks like this issue has been delayed in the UK for some reason. My local WH Smith always stock it. Although they've withdrawn #136 (the one with Janeway on the front) from shelves, the new one hasn't shown up yet.

It's tough to work out what date it was supposed to come out. The last issue had a printing error, stating it was due 22 December 2007, only a few days later! I've fired off an email to Titan but since they haven't updated their website with pictures from this DS9 special, I'm not expecting a reply.

Like many features in Star Trek: The Magazine, the DS9 articles were superficial and offered few new insights into the series. The only really interesting (and new) piece was the Brooks interview.

That's kind of the impression I'm getting from reading the summaries of the magazine in this thread. I don't care about relaunch novels or fan fictions or superfluous questions/info to the actors, many of which have been answered before anyhow. Most of Cirroc's and Brook's interview portions that they put on the DVD extras were already spent saying they are really close; don't see what the point is in the magazine rehashing that. I guess different fans have different DS9-related stuff that appeals to them though.

Does Brooks give the impression like he hates DS9 in the magazine interview? Ie: Like he does in his interview in the DVD extras commentary. Or has he changed his tune about that and just gives some stock answers that don't make his hate/disgruntledness with DS9 evident in the magazine?

As Editor, I thought I'd just come in here on this - the format we used for the DS9 special is the same that we've used for the Movies, and for the TNG special last summer. The idea isn't to provide a blow by blow account of the show but hopefully to make fans who've seen the episodes multiple times go back to them with a fresh eye. Each of those "mini" articles (and they're not designed to be anything more than that - there are 7 seasons plus the novels to cover) looks at a feature of DS9 and puts it in some form of context. For long term fans, the odds of loads of "new insights" is probably quite low, and I'm pleased that we obviously had some!!

As far as Avery Brooks was concerned, I didn't for one minute get the impression he hated or was disgruntled with DS9 although obviously he gave me his perspective as of summer 2007. He doesn't give many interviews and there are a lot of fans who won't have seen one before. There are also fans who don't have all the DVDs, or who simply watch the episodes rather than the supplementary material.

The Cirroc interview was written up by me, but there were a number of us present (as indicated in the stand-first) so I didn't think it fair or accurate to indicate that it was "my" interview. Avery gave the magazine nearly an hour of his time over the weekend for which I was very grateful.

I take your point that Avery and Cirroc always talk about how close they are - but to them, that is fundamental. It turned up in both interviews more than it does in print - I removed the various repetitions.

The DS9 continuation novels may not interest you, but with no ongoing TV series, and the movie still a year off, the novels and now the IDW comics, are the only new Trek we're getting, and they are very important to a lot of fans.

Answering other points above, the typo in David George's piece is just that. A typo!

As far as UK distribution goes, the magazine will be on release on 22 March, as it's now being printed in the US and shipped into the UK, in common with the majority of Titan's US-show based magazines. I signed off on the website update recently, so that should show there very soon.

A question to everyone here then... When we do our next DS9 special (and it will come round sooner than you think!) what would you like to see? (NB a Nana Visitor interview is on the way, in our upcoming Mirror Universe issue.) Who else would you like to see interviewed?

Thanks for your response, PaulSimpson. Personally, I enjoyed the issue, and I feel it's worth getting even though I have all the dvds and the DS9 Companion. It's not meant to be an exhaustive overview of the show, but something to commemorate the show for both casual and hardcore fans. Plus the "mini-articles" were all interesting and focussed on different aspects of the show, and I think the overall format of the issue was fine. If people want more details, they could always pick up the Ds9 Companion.

Sorry I nitpicked on the typo in David R. George's piece.

As I said before, the only thing I thought was missing was an interview with Nana Visitor. I'd like to know what she's up to now, and what her feelings are when she looks back on the show. Obviously, it might be difficult to ask something too personal, but I'd like to know if she gets along with Alexander Siddig seeing as they had a son together during the show's run and are now divorced.

Perhaps, for future commemorative issues, I'd like to see more comprehensive articles highlighting individual episodes written by KRAD, David George, and some of the other writers. I know that in a magazine, space is very limiting, but my favorite part of the issue aside from the Brooks and Lofton interviews were these essays that we got from some of the writers of the DS9 novels who participate in trekbbs. I always enjoy reading their insights on these forums, and I'd like to read more of their insights on specific episodes, series arcs, or characters.

As for the Brooks and Lofton interviews, I don't think you need to defend yourself there. I only posted one question and response from each interview, and while I wouldn't say that there is anything earthshattering revealed in either interview, it's still interesting as a fan to see Brooks and Lofton look back on their time on the show and on their relationship with each other.

Thanks again for replying. When I started this thread, I just wanted to put the word out that the issue was out there. Most star trek fans (like myself) may not buy the magazine unless the focus is on their favorite series. This being a DS9 forum, I figured it would be best to let people know about it here. Whether people buy it or not is up to them, but Ds9 fans should at least know it's out there and they can judge for themselves when they see the issue.

As for who else would i like to see interviewed:

1.Colm Meany: there's not much of him in the dvd extras

2. Alexander Siddig: I'm not sure he's spoken very much about DS9. I know he's in some current things like 24 as well as some films

3. Penny Johnson: I'd like to know how she enjoyed working for Ira Behr again on the 4400

4. Ira Behr: Is he planning a new show now that 4400 is over? Will he be open to working on Trek again for series VI?I was a big fan of the 4400 and was very disappointed when it got cancelled.

5. Louise Fletcher: I'd like to see what she's got to say about her time on DS9. She's 74 years old now, and she's had a long career in show business. I wonder what drew her to DS9, and if her performances were in anyway inspired by her personal life or her childhood. I think she might be the only actress in Trek who has won an Academy Award, too (not absolutely sure about that. I think it's true for the tv series at least. I think F. Murray Abraham won but he was in a film. I forgot if James Cromwell won anything). I just wonder how she ranks her recurring role in DS9 with her other tv roles. Also when did she realize that her character was actually going to play a vital role in the series?

Saturday 22nd March can't come fast enough! For the actors I would like to see interviewed in another issue:

I'f love to see Philip Anglim interviewed. Bareil was a popular character and I would love to know what he's up too now. Others like Ken Marshall, Paul Dooley, Camille Saviola, Barry Jenner etc would be great too.

I think [Louise Fletcher] might be the only actress in Trek who has won an Academy Award, too.
Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar, too. VOY's Brad Dourif was only nominated. Are there more?

ETA: Paul Winfield (Captains Terrel and Dathon) and Alfre Woodard were also nominated. As were James Cromwell and Theodore Bikel (Sergey Rozhenko from TNG).

Thanks for that info, Paul! I've collected every issue of Titan's ST magazine since 1995. Shame, it got switched from being a monthly to what seems to take forever to come around these days.

Do you know how is this effecting subscriptions? Do those get it posted from the U.S. or any sooner than the rest of us?

Jeffrey Combs! Although, I hear you've got an ENT special issue coming... which I'm looking forward to as well.

I stand corrected, Belar. As I logged off yesterday, I remembered Whoopi Goldberg won the Oscar for her role in Ghost.

Paul Simpson
Editor, Star Trek Magazine

Thanks very much, Mr. Simpson, for taking the time to post here. It is much appreciated! :)

I was especially glad to read your response with regard to Avery Brooks as I think he is a very misunderstood individual. I've met Mr. Brooks and have heard him speak at the Vegas Trek Con...and he left me with a very positive impression of him as an individual...and also with regard to his relationship to Star Trek. He was an enthusiastic speaker who seemed genuinely pleased (and almost surprised) at how much the fans looked forward to hearing what he had to say...and he was positive about his Trek experience.

Personally, it is my theory that Avery Brooks is simply a rather private and somewhat eccentric individual...and that this is often mistaken for disgruntlement about Trek. Sure, he had some opinions about how the Sisko character should have been portrayed...but then, any actor worth his or her salt would have such opinions about a character they are charged with playing for 7 years. And to be honest, every time he got his way with TPTB about the character of Sisko, Avery Brooks turned out to be right...and the character improved as a result of his input.

It is true that Mr Brooks is not a media whore...and it is true that he does not run from con to con like some of these guys who cannot seem to get any employment outside of Trek and so milk the cons for all they are worth. But I do not think that adds up to a dislike of Trek, or it's fans. :)

^ I think earlier posters were referring to the Avery Brooks interviews in the extras on the dvd sets and possibly reading too much into them. I think he conveyed the fact that DS9 was a huge committment, and that it was a challenge to stick with it when he was tempted to leave the show. I think that's just Brooks being honest. He's not putting down the show by saying that. He's just conveying the truth about his wanting to leave at some point, which probably had everything to do with the amount of time he was being asked to dedicate to the show and nothing to do with the show's quality. From the few interviews that he's done, I get the impression that he's proud of his work on DS9. Understandably, he probably wants to maintain some privacy which is why we don't hear so much from him, but I never got the impression that he was annoyed in any way by his association with Ds9 or Star Trek unlike say Shatner and Nimoy who have gone through their love-hate relationship with the franchise.
