TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

I'm one of those people that when visiting someone's home and sees the "smooth motion" feature on, I immediately shut it off, whether they're okay with me fiddling with the settings or not.

And if they kick your ass when they find out you screwed around with their TV, would you blame them?

I wouldn't.

I wouldn't.

I’d admit had it coming.

But so did their TV.

That said, they don’t even notice the difference.

I remember my friends had their DVD player set for 4:3 even though their TV was 16:9. So the image was warped and distorted. I pointed it out to them and they couldn’t understand what I was saying. After fixing it, they said they didn’t understand what the point of that was.

It's not your place to judge. It's not your fucking TV.

I mean, if you politely ask them to turn it off, that'd be one thing. They might even indulge you.

But if you start messing around with people's TVs behind their back, you're asking for trouble. You've proved that you're a shitty guest who has no consideration for other people's property. It's as if you stole food from their fridge or ransacked their closet.

To put it another way...if somebody visited YOUR house and turned motion smoothing all the fucking way up, you wouldn't take too kindly to that, would you?

That said, they don’t even notice the difference.

Oh, I think most people would.

I definitely would. I actually LIKE motion smoothing. I make it a point to have it turned on, all the time, no matter what I'm watching.

So there. :p

Hey, just doing them a favor.

Sounds like your tv needs to be fixed too. Gimme your address and I’ll give prompt service. May slip in some free cable. Then maybe we can go out to see Medieval Times together.

The first family I knew with a widescreen, wall-size TV insisted they had to watch everything stretched wide, no matter how it had been filmed.

That is literally the worst, but…

For the longest time my mother could not understand why there were black bars above and below or on both sides of an image on a television.

My wife and mother in law still don’t get it. Despite the number of times I’ve tried to explain that it’s how the movie is meant to be seen. My wife doesn’t like to mess with our system though, so that’s nice. I can always tell when my 2yo has messed with our receiver though. I really need to get a cabinet with doors.

Aspect ratio doesn’t seem to bother some people. There was a channel…weather channel I think…that didn’t look quite right either way. I miss my tube tv still. Did NBC look a bit yellowish to anyone but me? That worked in their favor for THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES.

I saw a documentary on SCIENCE back…perhaps pre MYTHBUSTERS where a Mars suit was being tried…and it looked so much more…important…on 35 mm than video.

But COPS was at its best in the camcorder days with mercury vapor lights conspiring to make the nightscape hellish…LEDs and digital makes things look too well lit…too clean. Security cameras make the dawn seem earlier…but digitals have their own artifacts.

OFF THE AIR from AS uses artifacts and art interestingly. Having a still image with a figure coming out of it suggests a hostile invisibility best used with green screen ghillie suits to absorb softer invisible figures using cell phone tricks perhaps…

Anyone got an idea if the 4K super-HD 1-4 movies will be released for digital download? The idea of having to buy a super HD blu ray player to watch them is... Expensive!

They are actually pretty cheap these days. Walmart usually has them around $150.00.

I don't care for this film regardless of what version it is. The only way this movie would be watchable for me is if you tighten up all those long, boring shots and quicken the pace. But then the movie would probably be at best an hour long.

My father on the other hand, who is a die hard Trekkie and HATED this film when it was first released, loves the Director's Cut.

I actually find TMP a really comfy sci-fi watch. If you want to relax and go along at a slow, slow pace it's a good movie. Then kick into TWOK for your action hit. TMP is Star Trek does 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's not 2001... But I enjoy it. Looking forward to the Director's Cut Super HD version next.

StarTrek.com has a brief BTS slideshow of work on the 4K DE, and a short video of a segment of the Drydock sequence being reviewed during audio mixing.

There are a couple tidbits you can glean from the images and video. It looks like they're using a more correct type of blur for the out-of-focus reflection of the Enterprise over Kirk's face (it's hard to be sure, since it's highly compressed internet video of a monitor), and it looks like there's some new new effects being added to the Spock Walk. I always interpreted the Spikey Tunnel between the Iris and the V'Ger island added in the DE was supposed to be what the projection Spock saw looked like when it was turned off, so I assume they're making that more explicit by showing the Spikey Tunnel turning into the images of things V'Ger encountered.

I am hoping that they don't go overboard stylistically vs the new Theatrical version since I want to have another crack at my DE/SLV hybrid and it will be a pain if I have to colour correct scenes e.g. on the bridge, to get them to match.

Maybe a silly question here. Will this be an exact duplication of the existing director's cut ( just upgraded to 4k/improving the Image)

Or are they making changes (I.e new scenes)? Reason I ask is that over at Trek Movie they mention "changes". Which to me indicates new/alternate footage

If they are adding/ using alternate footage , how can this be called " a director's cut" without the Director involved in these further changes?

Good question as I noted the same thing.
