They do have their senses of hearing and smell and most houses don't have that many different places the owner could be. It's not too surprising that they fully understand all the sounds of their household.

My cat has the runs and is acting just like a human would under the same circumstances. Goes to the litter box, uses it, comes back out, a few minutes later he's like "nope" and heads back to the litter box. Did this three times.
