S4 coming Nov 18!

‪‪I agree that there’s no need to keep them from overlapping, but it’s worth noting that if it were just airing on Nickelodeon proper it would likely be aired in just as an absurd and frustrating manner. Their track record with scheduling for shows meant for the same audience as Prodigy, like Avatar TLA, Legend of Korra, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was horrendous. There would be inexplicable delays of months between episodes, it’s almost standard for Nickelodeon’s scheduling for these kinds of shows to be incredibly frustrating and often seem to be counterintuitive.

I would be happy if there’s no hiatus coming for Discovery, like you said, the primary audience for Prodigy won’t understand the reasoning, and I have seen no indication that a significant portion of the general fanbase is against getting multiple Trek episodes at once. The exact opposite seems to be the case, with a lot of folks excited when we believed Prodigy and Discovery would definitely overlap.

Hopefully we’ll get a full Discovery episode count and release schedule sooner than later!

Ive said it before, I'd prefer no overlap. There's always delays and so far 4 series' don't quite make a full year. With SNW coming and still the possibility of S31, they should be able to fill a year.

I'm just happy to have so much Star Trek, plus the MCU and Star Wars stuff.

With the announcement of Prodigy’s upcoming hiatus(es), ‪‪I can’t help but wonder if Discovery might be getting one too?
I doubt it. Without a midseason hiatus, Disco should finish off it's season just in time for Picard to premiere in February. With a hiatus, that's no longer possible. Whatever the reason is behind Prodigy's hiatus, I doubt Paramount+ is going to allow it to derail both Disco and Picard, and potentially cause a snowball effect that could impact SNW too.

If there is a hiatus for Discovery coming up, ‪‪I don’t think it would be done for Prodigy’s benefit, but would be in order to accommodate Discovery’s post production needs.

‪‪I don’t think it’s the most likely scenario, and honestly, I’d prefer that they don’t, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Discovery to have a hiatus to allow for more production time. There was a 6 week hiatus in the middle of the 1st season of Discovery, after all. When the release date announcement dropped, fans seemed quite surprised that Season 4 is coming as soon as it is next week, since they only completed shooting at the end of August, less than 3 months ago.

If there were a hiatus for Discovery following the return of Prodigy it would be right after the 7th episode of Discovery Season 4, basically halfway through a 13 episode season. And Prodigy’s first 10 episode run, regardless of Disco’s status, will conclude on February 3rd. In the scenario that Disco’s Season 4 is put on hold, Picard could pick up the same week Prodigy ends, or the following on Feb 10th, leaving Discovery to conclude after, to be followed by an uninterrupted run of SNW.

‪‪I don’t think it’s the most likely thing to happen, but I believe no one predicted that Discovery would be coming back as soon as it is, or that Prodigy would get a hiatus right now, so ‪‪I’m half expecting whatever the next scheduling announcement is, it will be a surprise.

Netflix doesn't normally drop a trailer or add a 'new season coming' title until a week or so before a new season is supposed to air. That's exactly what happened last year. And no, people HOPED that season 2 of short treks would be on netflix but it was evident pretty early on that Netflix did not have the rights due to all the non-discovery related content in season 2.

I'm also a bit concerned. Because yesterday when i got the email from Netflix with the new releases, there was no mention of Discovery.

Not being able to watch Prodigy in Germany, so i don't know much about the show, but could the reason for Disco episodes being released at the same time as Prodigy and for the hiatus be, that both shows are set in the 32nd century?

Why do we have to go through this every fucking season? Netflix has the international rights for Discovery until the series ends. It was also confirmed at the the Star Trek Day event that Discovery would once again be airing on netflix 24 hours after it airs in the U.S just like every other year.

According to the official sources and statements, Prodigy is set in 2383, five years after Voyager’s finale, and just a few years after Lower Decks.

So the story goes, CBSAA/Paramount+ were unhappy over the fact they lost so many subscribers when Disco went on hiatus during the first season who didn't return when the season returned that they actually made it a rule the show could not take anymore midseason hiatuses.

Granted, that raises questions of why is Prodigy taking a hiatus.

IIRC, season 4 of Disco is only supposed to be ten episodes rather than thirteen.

We don’t yet know Season 4’s number of episodes. I’ve also seen people say it’s 10, but also they have it listed as 13 on Memory Alpha, and IMDb has listings for 11 episodes, but I don’t believe any of those are from anything official or from any direct statement from Paramount+ or the production at this point.

10 (SNW) + 10 (PIC) + 10 (LD) + 10 (PRO) + 13 (DSC) = 53 weeks.

If Covid hadn't thrown them such a hard curveball, they'd have a new episode every week of the year without fail. I think that's mainly why Disco has 13 episodes per season.

With Prodigy’s full season order being 20, it seems like it’ll probably be divided up into 10 episodes a year, since the return date for the back half is just “later in 2022.”

It’ll most likely pick back up in the fall, around the same time this year’s season started, or maybe a little earlier, with the overlap with Discovery’s premiere, and the potential for overlap with Discovery on Prodigy episodes 5-10 decreasing the weeks of new episodes from 53 to 47.

But that would still allow for them to run almost continuously all year, perhaps to allow for weeks off between series, like the one between the Lower Decks finale and Prodigy premiere.

Prodigy is 20? That I didn't know.

Three seasons could get them up to 65, the magic number for strip syndication for kids' shows. That would be very good if they could get PRO up to the point where they could show it five days a week on Nickelodeon. Locking in the next generation of fans.

I was surprised to read it as well, but it was clarified when they announced it had been renewed for a second season that the first season was actually 20. ‪‪I think nearly everyone around here/the fandom was under the impression it was 10, like Lower Decks and Picard, but apparently the 20 episode order was in press blurbs and statements as early as this February, most of us just didn’t catch it!

Agreed, it running daily on Nickelodeon would help to guarantee a whole slew of new Trekkies!

I'd definitely disregard Memory Alpha. Back in the summer, they claimed season 2 of Lower Decks was going to be twelve episodes, which we now know was false.

If nothing else, it is rather strange that Netflix is doing so little to promote it. The coming soon section has other series which are much further away than Disco, and there's still no S4 trailer on the Disco page.

Anthony Rapp just confirmed the Netflix launch date is the 19th. I do wonder why the lack of promotion, perhaps the impending launch of Paramount+ globally has soured things somewhat?

Glad that's resolved for y'all.

I'm still on pins and needles trying to find out why season 4's rumored to be 10 episodes long! I've ascended past "will this show appear on fan televisions" and into the realm of "will I have to warn my obsessed roommates they're getting less Adira."
