GhostBusters 3 is Finally Being Made. (2020 Release)

Honestly, after having watched it recently, you can really feel the difference in the budget between the two, and the advancements in effects between them. In terms of cinematography, it's a much better film, and I feel it holds up even better at higher resolutions than the original. The one area where both could see improvements in any remasters are in the proton beam effects. They haven't aged all that well.

The film was my introduction to Peter MacNicol and I've been a huge fan of his ever since.

Likewise! Wonderful actor, with a seemingly limitless repertoire of accents.

Agreed. A great example of a (relatively) big budget being used well, for once. Afterlife seems to be following strongly in that spirit.

Ghostbusters II has a very special place in my heart, being the first movie I ever saw in the cinema (technically second, but I don't actually remember seeing Disney's Peter Pan since I was like 2 or 3 at the time) and it came out at a time when Ghostbusters was my little seven year old self's favourite thing in the whole world. I had a bunch of the toys, I watched the cartoon all the time (including a handful I'd taped off the TV), and I had a storybook of the original movie . . . with a two page spread fo the library ghost that terrified me, yet I kept peeking at it all the same. I think I even got Ecto-1 for Christmas just a few weeks later. So for me that movie was peak Ghostbusters fanboy time.

That said, while I certainly still adore it and don't subscribe to much of the criticism often levelled at it; I think it is fair to say that it's objectively a lesser movie compared to the first and hasn't aged quite as well overall. A lot of that is down to how timeless the first movie was by design; from the cinematography, to the prop design and even wardrobe, there's very little in terms of pop culture suffusing it. I'm not saying you can't tell it's a movie made in the early 80's, but more that it doesn't scream "80's movie" in and of itself, and thus manages not to date itself (see also: Star Wars.)

The sequel on the other hand feels very very much a product of it's time. Like the movie goes out of it's way to wave at the audience and yell "hey, look how modern and current we are!", which of course makes it feel rather dated in some ways. Aside from that, the script isn't quite as tight, some of the humour doesn't quite land and while the effects are greatly improved in terms of sophistication, at times it feels like they're leaning on the spectacle a little too much, just for the hell of it and neglected and paradoxically grounded feel that leant the first movie much of it's charm. Oh and the car's "Ecto 1-A" makeover was *hideous*!

The subway and dancing toaster scenes are probably the two I think most of along with the Statue of Liberty sequence. The river of slime underneath Manhattan is a great effect and one of the few that I think ranks up there with the classic effects of the 1984 film, at least in terms of how memorable it is.

I watched the two original movies back to back recently and I really don't get the repeat assertion. I think people might have false memories to that account, as there's far more originality to it than a lot of sequels do, and the scenarios in both movies are pretty much polar opposites.
Yeah, I've never understood that complaint either. There are a few vaguely similar plot points, but it's not like A New Hope and The Force Awakens. Side note: While I acknowledge how close TFA was to ANH, it's still different enough for me to enjoy it.
"Soon the world will be mine and Vigo's. Well, mostly Vigo's."

So much to love in GB2, and Peter MacNicol's Janosz is high on my personal list. Never understood the negativity around it.
Yeah, he was definitely a highlight. I was already a fan from when he was on the TV series Numbers, but GBII made me an even bigger one.

Not gonna lie, I think of Vigo the Carpathian a LOT more often than I do Gozer the Gozerian. His painting has inspired tons of memes and the image has gone down as one of the most memorable in the history of the franchise. So GB2 must have been doing something right even if the general audience reception wasn't up to that given the first film.

I would love to see GB2 again on the big screen. Have not seen it that way since I was a kid. While I have seen the original 3 times in the last 6 or 7 years. Most recent on Halloween a couple weeks ago.

I think Vigo is more memorable because he was properly scary whereas Gozer was a bit more cartoonish. Plus, there was a lot more visual build-up to Vigo thanks to the painting whereas Gozer in his physical form is so brief. People are more likely to remember the Winston quote, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, and the Terror Dogs than Gozer himself.

Which kind of makes me wonder if they'll do remasters and package the 3rd movie with it at some point.

I suspect that might depend on how well Afterlife does.

I would also add the Mayor scene at the end with Dickless.

I'm pretty sure we see Gozer climbing out of the pit in the trailer. If Gozer is returning I wonder if Vigo will also get a sophomore appearance of some kind?

I doubt it, this incident is directly related to Shandor's activities. Vigo was unrelated.

That's a good point. Vigo is shown more throughout the movie, and I feel he's more imposing. Gozer on the other hand is only seen at the end, and in a short confrontation. Most of the threats are manifestations, such as either the gargoyles or the Stay-Puft. Gozer themselves doesn't appear all that threatening.

This will be the first GB movie I've seen in the theater, I wasn't born when the first one came out, was only 2 when the second on came out, and I wasn't interested enough to go the theater for the all women one.
I wonder if they brought back Slaviza Jovan as Gozer? I know technically Gozer is a god and doesn't age, but it could be fun to kind of fudge things and bring her back too, since all of the other returning characters are being played by the original actors.

There is a site out there that claims that Gozer will be played by Olivia Wilde. It's not a site that I generally depend upon for accurate information, but even a broken clock can be right twice a day.
