What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

The version I heard was something like,

a topologist is someone who can't tell the difference between a coffee cup and a doughnut.

;)

Someone served coffee to me in a cup that did not have a handle. It wasn't broken off, it just never had one. Stupidest coffeecup in the world because there was no place to hold it.

I was given a cup like that once as an office "Secret Santa" gift. It came with a zip-up sleeve so you could hold it without burning your hands (apart form the metal bits of the zip got hot too, so that was clearly thought through). I have long since relegated it to "standing in a corner of my bookcase for something to keep spare pens in" duty.

Not that you asked, haha, but those cups are used by a ship's watch crew sailing in bitterly cold temps to keep both hands warm from the coffee held inside. Some sailors also wear mittens over their gloves, making it impossible to hold a cup by the handle.

I've never sailed far enough north to actually need one of those cups, but I do have one, and I treasure it !

I wasn't on a ship and I wasn't wearing mittens or gloves. But thanks for explaining why anyone would have made a cup like that.

...

Well, you'd better wear gloves or mittens because when the coffee is piping hot, you'll burn your fingers or drop the cup on the floor.

Right. Next time a restaurant serves me a hot beverage in a cup with no handle, I will ask them to keep it for me while I run home and get my gloves and come back.

I don't remember that ever happening to me unless said beverage was soup or bouillon, in which case they gave me a spoon and I didn't need to touch the cup/bowl. In Chinese restaurants, the spoon is made of china with the same pattern as the cup (it's nice).

Since this keeps coming up, I’m gonna say my most controversial hot Trek take:

None of it’s real. It’s all fake!
