I'm getting Guyver vibes due to the antenna design. Now I'll be disappointed if he's not the star Kamen Rider when we actually reach 2071 much like i'll be disappointed if we don't get a ninja rider in 2022

Yeah, I'd also like to see Kamen Rider Shinobi for real. Although I think they'd have to redesign the costumes and remake the "episodes" in the spinoff special, since the original costumes were remodels of previous Rider costumes, and if it were the real deal, it would rate a more original design.

Meanwhile, I'm amused that they're doing a future Rider from 2071, because I was originally going to set Tangent Knights in 2071, but decided to go with 2046 instead.

2071 would've been more believe-able IMO.

 

The 75th anniversary of Kamen Rider as opposed to the 100th. The lead character is a major otaku who's constantly dropping references to Showa- and Heisei-era tokusatsu and anime, and I figured her familiarity with those shows would be more credible if it were closer to the present. It also lets me keep the slang and cultural references more contemporary.

As for the credibility of the super-armor and other technological advances, that's all explained within the story. Indeed, it's kind of the driving mystery of Book 1.

With the more visceral look of the suit and the spiderwebs coming off his body, this looks like the closest Rider has gotten to Shin (90s version) since that movie. The vibe of everything is closer to Guyver than Kamen Rider, but in a way that absolutely works.

Something tells me it's about to get gritty and there will koolaid/blood spewing from monsters.

 

Power Rangers Franchise Launching a Brand New Universe With Netflix

Are the "Netflix Power Rangers Universe" the first productions completely without "SuperSentai" footage, 90s and 2017 movies aside?

• Still disappointed we've never gotten the Power Rangers version of Uchu Sentai KyuRanger.
  
• Really wish we'd get the 2017 movie cast in more movies or mini series. Like them very much.

 

That's the impression I get. Not sure how I feel about that, frankly. And will they really be creating something entirely original, or will they be doing yet another reboot of the Mighty Morphin Rangers, like the movie and the comics?

Just to split hairs, there have been occasional individual episodes of Power Rangers shows without any Sentai footage to speak of, though I assume that by "productions" you mean entire series. The first episode of Beast Morphers was all original footage, and the first episode of Dino Fury had only one brief Sentai clip as part of a flashback. But of course they did reuse Sentai costumes and props.

A bit on the nose IMO

The franchise's last attempt at civil rights discussion was Zero-One, which ended with... Aruto continuing to sell the robots as workers, but just being 'friendly' about it.

 

Hunh. Well, I'm not optimistic about the Black subfranchise's ability to handle sympathetic portrayals of its villains. After all, Black RX went to the trouble to establish that the Crisis Empire was just trying to colonize Earth to save its people from annihilation, and that their homeworld's rank and file population was not evil and just wanted to survive, but then

had Black RX destroy their whole planet in the finale, killing billions as if it were no big deal.

 

I guess Japan views Outsiders colonizing Earth as bad?

 

No, because Kamen Rider Ghost used the same dynamic but came to a far more peaceable resolution. It's just that Showa-era kids' shows were more superficial about these things and just tended to go for the big boom at the end without giving much thought to the morals. Like in the second episode of Ultraman, where Ultraman exterminated 2 billion miniaturized Baltan refugees rather than just steer them to an alternate homeworld they could colonize. (Which came back to bite Earth repeatedly when it turned out there were vengeful survivors.)

And it's not just the Japanese. How many innocent techs, maintenance workers, and prisoners were in the Death Star when Luke Skywalker blew it up? Who cares, woohoo, happy ending!

I agree, many innocent workers on the Death Star suffered because Luke Skywalker blew it up.

During what era did Japanese Kids shows start thinking about a solution that wasn't a simple spectacle at the end, but what made sense to us adults?

 

What gets me is how many prisoners there must've been. I mean, Luke and Han were able to pass off Chewie as a prisoner being transferred. The guards were not surprised by the presence of an unfamiliar Wookiee prisoner, which tells us that the detention levels must have been pretty well-stocked with prisoners. So Luke probably killed a bunch of fellow rebels, sympathizers, and the like.

I don't think it's the children who would've changed -- I think it's more that, over time, the adults making children's shows have gained more respect for the intelligence of their viewers. Or at least they understand that the shows have adult fans as well.
