The Most Disliked Episode of VGR, Season 4: 2021 Edition...

"RANDOM THOUGHTS" is saved because it showcases Tuvok as an investigator. (This series showed the best security chief portrayal of the job after Odo on DS9.)

REVULSION
THE RAVEN
RETROSPECT
VIS A VIS
UNFORGETTABLE
DEMON

I understand why "The Raven" is still here, but I like it. A compelling exploration of childhood trauma.

I think at the time it just felt SO ridiculous that they would run into Seven's parents ship right away after taking Seven onboard.

But I've now just accepted that the DQ is stocked with more people and things from the AQ than there are in the actual AQ, so it doesn't stick out so much anymore.

REVULSION
RANDOM THOUGHTS
RETROSPECT
VIS A VIS
UNFORGETTABLE
DEMON

There are too many episodes beginning with R, it's hard remembering which episode is which. ;)

I'll save The Raven as it was an interesting peek into Seven's past.

EDIT: Ninjad!

On second thoughts I'll go with Random Thoughts, which is made watchable with Roxann Dawson playing a big part.

REVULSION
RETROSPECT
VIS A VIS
UNFORGETTABLE
DEMON

I believe "Random Thoughts" has been eliminated, twice.

Anyway, I am gonna save "REVULSION", because the ones left are more repulsive to me.:D

J/k, I like the idea of a crazy holo-serial killer... Kinda like holo-Ted Bundy, or holo-Charles Manson... It's scary, but it's good.

RETROSPECT
VIS A VIS
UNFORGETTABLE
DEMON

Oh sheesh, all the bestest ones were taken.

RETROSPECT is the least worst, and has a couple decent scenes. As usual, Jeri Ryan excels (another show you need to see her in is "Boston Public"...) If there's any more proof in this series that she was hired for her acting ability and not what's inside that sardine/duct tape outfit she's enclosed in, this is another good example. The story would be a lot worse off without her.

That, and the EMH makes a mistake. "I'm a Doctor spouting McCoy catchphrases, not a perfect compute--" - oh, wait...

What's left:
VIS A VIS
UNFORGETTABLE
DEMON

Season 4 and 5 were the best of this series. There are very few episodes in season 4 that I would call bad. It makes choosing my first save very, very difficult.

Easily. For me, season 2 shows a few episodes that are great, but mixed with too much much meh. Season 3 inches upward, but during that time they found their idea - and were far enough away from the Kazon cabbage patch (thankfully)... Season 4 is a marvelous reinvention and even revitalizing the Borg, after they were

(controversial belief) reduced to cheap comedy fodder in that 1996 movie...

I think I'll go with one that is probably on most people's 'best of' list for this show... "LIVING WITNESS".

It was an excellent showcase for The Doctor. Even though it is the 'backup one', which was never mentioned before or since, I can forgive this ordinarily ridiculous oversight because of the strength of the story and the performances.

And it's portable! I mean, ZIP Drives were popular back then, and having offsite backups is a good thing, but one would think the ship would also have a backup in its own mainframe too... (VOY treknobabble sometimes goes so far out of left field when using Unix OS and IBM mainframes as allegory or allusion, but in Living Witness they don't go so far over the top with it... they'd still have to go a long way, given how much more of the story makes up for this necessary contrivance. )

It also showed us a 'mirror universe' crew without actually going there. That was clearly fun for the cast. And I daresay we all had fun watching, as an audience.

A massive breath of fresh air. TNG didn't do it at all. DS9 went to the mirror universe and, depending on whom you ask, finds it to be hit or miss. VOY did a really solid innovation and I wish this were a two-parter and let the story really simmer with this evil side being dramaticized because (a) it's compelling dramatically, and (b) the actors were clearly loving to do it.

I love the message about revisionist history, which is done even more so now than ever. While the internet has done a lot of good, it has also created a massively toxic environment where opinions are treated as facts. This is a cautionary tale, because we can very easily be this episode down the road.

Variation on a theme, but this episode is indeed poignant. If anything, it almost glosses over too much, but despite that I too place it at the top of my favorites list.

It's a shame this was Tim Russ' only directing for the show, because he did a magnificent job.

^^this

I love how the TV shows let the actors try their hand at directing, and out of 80s/90s Trek a lot of talented directors showed their stuff.

"Concerning Flight", just for Jonathan Rhys-Davies as Leonardo.

:luvlove:

He picks his roles well. "Concerning Flight" was his final appearance, sadly, and "Scorpion" did him better. How much more they could do with the character is up for grabs... but he's done a lot more work than I'd ever noticed when checking out IMDB, and he'll always be Professor Arturo first and foremost to me, but when I see him in Indiana Jones or VOY, I certainly don't see Arturo there.

Saving Demon. While it's pretty mediocre and nowhere near as good as Course:Oblivion that it sets up, it's also miles ahead of the last two.

VIS A VIS
UNFORGETTABLE

Ninja'd! I was just writing that I was going to save "Demon" for much the same reason, but then I remembered that it has that complete bullshit about the ship running out of deuterium and having to land on a planet to look for it because they completely forgot about Bussard collectors and apparently believed deuterium to be a rare and obscure material. And it was written by the show's science advisor. No. That's unforgivable. Absolute garbage. Thanks for sparing me from that decision.

I'll save "Unforgettable", because out of those two, I remember finding "Vis a Vis" more annoying. And Chakotay gets given something to do, which is a rarity.

The worst episode for season four is "Vis a Vis"!

While I agree that these two are the worst two of the season I would have chosen "Unforgettable" as the worst of the worst.

For one thing, it's stupid. Just think about it for more than ten seconds and you'll realize that it doesn't make any sense.

I tried watching Vis a Vis and lost interest partway through. And I made it through Threshold and Sub Rosa! Sounds like a worthy choice.

"Vis a vis is stupid because for the nth time since the beginning of the series they tap into the well of "wayward Tom Paris". I mean you get multiple deja vu watching that episode. The worst part is that it's far from being the last one with that theme.

About that, The Doctor is nothing but a computer program, so why not unlimited backups? Sure, a backup is only as good as it's most recent copy, but you could always make a backup of a backup of a backup. I doubt it would be much different than dragging and dropping a file on your PC from one drive to the next.

The computer can emulate several, even many human holograms at the same time then why during crises can't there be more than one Doctor I in the room tapping into the same database and therefore with the same abilities as the first Doctor? IOW, there'd be no need for triage, you could treat all injured people at the same time.

The medical database alone would be massive to have The Doctor, never mind tactile files to perform surgery, diagnostic files to... well, diagnose, etc.

I can see why they only have one.

Didn't they kill him off in that show? I wonder why.

John Rhys-Davies was vocal about not liking the direction Sliders was going in – toning down the intelligent sci-fi ideas and doing pastiches of recent movies and adding more action – and also had poor relations with senior Fox executives at the same time. They fired him and killed his character off in an episode Rhys-Davies had come up with the story for as a deliberate "fuck you".

To play devil's advocate, the production for Sliders was an unholy mess even at the best of times – TNG's own Tracy Tormé, who created the show, was unceremoniously fired during season two – and Rhys-Davies can be... outspoken and difficult. For example, he made an infamously aggressive appearance on a British current affairs program, Question Time, in 2019; and he's the only member of the nine actors who constituted the Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings movies to not have the Elvish for "nine" tattoo, because the rest of them asked his stunt double to get it instead.

From what I recall reading, Rhys-Davies did not care for the change in format. I've not looked up his original season 3 script compared to what was filmed on screen...

This season has mostly good episodes. Concerning Flight really stands out as one I don't like watching. The Da Vinci character annoys me.
