Spoilers "Supergirl": the 6th and final season

I wish the Super-shows were more consistent about Kryptonian powers. Superman and Tal-Rho can fly in space unprotected, but Supergirl needs a spacesuit. Superman can hear one of his sons crying for help from thousands of miles away (never mind the speed of sound), but Supergirl can't hear her friend getting shot in her own secret base in the same city.

 

I cheered when Lex shot him. Finally something interesting happened.
I just wish it was one of the main characters.

A series with some actual threat you mean?
I just think it would make the finale more interesting if so. Also, from watching the promo for next week, it looks like she calls on reinforcements but I didn’t see Superman there. Very odd.

 

Incidentally, wouldn't Esme have the powers of a 5th-dimensional imp while she's around Nyxly? And wouldn't that let her escape? Or does her duplication power only work with species from our dimension?

I wonder if Esme gets any "powers" from humans that her own species doesn't innately have. Like maybe her species isn't capable of endurance running, or can't digest lactose, but as long as Esme's among humans, she can do those things.

 

If only the rest of the run of the show had reached the emotional beats of the final few minutes of the most recent episode, I would probably have less issues with the writing.

Now, if they can just stick the landing...

 

As soon as I mentioned that Dey was actually kind of cool in this ep, my husband said, "he's gonna die." It's annoying how he's right all the time.

I'm still not sure I buy Lex In Love, but I guess we'll see.

When Andrea called Lena, I was like, "FINALLY!" One should always have at least one friend in the world who will tell you the truth. It's also the most human Andrea has acted all season.

The argument between Kara and Alex had me laughing because I remember my mom and her sister having arguments when her sister had kids. Kara was totally in the right, but, being Kara, made up with her sister anyway.

Poor Brainy! It isn't just the going back, it's that they want him to submerge himself (losing himself in the process) for the sake of Colu. THAT sucks. Jesse Rath plays Brainy so well, he's the character I will actually miss. As far as losing Nia though, he has to have known that would happen eventually since Nai's descendent is in the Legion with him. Of course, knowing doesn't always help with things like that. I hope they at least mention Dream Girl (or whatever they call her in the 31st century - Dreamer as well?).

Thank goodness, only one more week of this.

Why was he even on the show if it wasn't to be arm candy?

Nia Nal can only go into the future with her boyfriend if she is not the ancestor of Nura Nal.

Maeve could be the Ancestor, or brainy could come back for NIa after she has had kids. Considering that her children (a bucket of sperm) are in a freezer at a fertility clinic, she doesn't actually have to stay in the past to procreate in the past, she just has to arrange for some one to accept her baby batter at a predetermined point in time.

Mommy is the alien, and daddy is the human.

Mommy is a Naltorian, and Daddy's name is Nal.

We also heard on the show that Mum dreamed that she would meet this human and make whoopie with him.

Kate was this much of of a Robot on Grey's Anatomy too.

I don't think I agree that Kara was in the right -- or at least, I think she and Alex had equally valid positions -- but the real issue wasn't what Kara was arguing, but how she argued it, by getting pushy and not deferring to Alex's authority about her own daughter. That was overstepping regardless of the merits of her position.

 

"Its not how it was like when you were young" said Alex about racist anti Alien beliefs.

Superman probably saved the world from many alien invasions, that killed millions(?) of people.

So many Space Hitlers.

Of course the little alien girl had to hide at the turn of the century.

Society is more nuanced now.

Society can see that not all aliens are to blame for all alien aggression against Earth.

Kara is right to hide from murderous lynchings. She's still hiding so long as she has a secret identity. Although did Supergirl murder Kara Danvers last week? Kara Zor-El is a real person, but Kara Danvers might be toast.

As a Gay woman, Alex wants to confront and diffuse the mob, and become accepted, even if Esme's Kindergarten is the new Stonewall. Alex has been an out gay woman for 5 minutes, but she has a gun, a badge and combat training. Alex had the benefit of hiding who she was for decades, to create a hetero normative accepted life where she could thrive as a person who does not have sex with any one compatible.

If Alex had come out as a teenager, and Hank Henshaw was never replaced by the Martian Manhunter, it's likely that she never would have risen to a position of authority in the DEO. She would have been a punch line hidden in a closet sized office never given the same opportunities as a straight woman.

Living a lie for all those years, is why she doesn't want Esme to live a lie.

 

Is Ben Lockwood still a thing post crisis?

 

Prime Lex Luthor, ran the DEO, and never went to jail.

Ben Lockwood may be a lone crack pot with a card board sign protesting outside the space port, but Agent Liberty probably wasn't, if Prime Luthor didn't bankroll him Like Earth One Luthor did.

Probably not. If I recall correctly, J'onn wasn't aware of Kenny Li being alive post-Crisis until Alex explained it.

 

Pretty much. Shows of this kind will never, ever kill off main characters, giving their plots some real sense of danger. They are all plot-armored to ridiculous degrees when there were many occasions where they should have been killed, especially the non-super powered characters.

Yes, Kara was right--she's the alien who had to grow up monitoring herself around humans--Alex did not, but Alex was trying to use the "mother" card she lacked to cards to deal. She is no mother or has a mother's instincts after what can only be a couple of weeks of being around Esme, so she was talking out of her ass, instead of listening to one who is an alien in a world of humans.

Yes--i've pointed that out; he knows the course of history, which should have included the fact he would return to the future, and acted as a fail safe to not become deeply involved with anyone, as its playing around with the emotions of one you know is technically fated to live another life and is--in fact--"dead" to his reality.

 

After she has had the baby or after she has had and raised baby, twenty years uptime, Nia can go to the future with Brainy. Either he waits with her, or he time jumps twenty years, and picks her up.

It's been mentioned at least once.

If Nia is post surgery, then she spent months rigorously harvesting sperm before the operation, for later, for just in case. She is young, and unless her parents paid for it, unless she used her college fund, where did she get 25 thousand dollars from as a teenager? Nicole is 24 right now, and she's been on Supergirl for 4 seasons, and NIa might be the same age. Nia's sister has a doctorate. Money should have been set aside for Nia to get an advanced degree as well, if mom and dad loved both their kids the same. It's possible that Nia was given a choice on whether she wanted to go to college or get a vagina. (Wikipedia says that Nicole sued the school board for not letting her use the bathroom when she was a teen student, and was awarded $75,000. So her affirmation surgery was paid for by irrational bigotry. Sweet Irony. Although it's not laid down that that is where the money came from.)

If NIa is pre-surgery, then having a baby is super easy. She may have gotten a journalism degree, and anticipated that the money for surgery would appear later after she got a good job and worked hard for a few years. 20 year olds are in College (a four year degree, starting at 17 or 18 years of age.) and she was 20 when she joined the bullpen at catco, so Nia may not be college educated. Maybe the sister needed the degree in psychology to be Dreamer, and Nia was shit out of luck, because her genitals presented wrong, as far as all the lore on the Dreamer super powers were concerned.

Not that anyone should expect this series to take the serious route, but having Brainy return to his own time and that is--as they say--that, with no option or last second..

"Oh looksie, it turns out the future issue was fixed. I can stay!"

"Oh, joy--in my emotional state, I forget that I did return, fix the issue, but was meant to live on 21st century earth!"

"Well, whaddayah know--Mon-El or anyone else technobabbled something and I do not have to leave!"

"We misread the archives--I was not fit to fix the problem, as it took the unique powers of Supergirl in concert with others to get the job done, oh, but she's decided to live her own life in the future."

...should never be expected. Its never been in this series' DNA to have serious consequences or conclusions for the main cast. The best dramatic option as the series capper is for SG--alone--to leave for the future (the same choice made by the SG from Justice League Unlimited ), and there it all ends.

 

Branic 5 is "joining" the big brain.

It seems like that means his death.

They cut his face off, scoop out his brain, and then put the jelly into a special cradle, which is a socket that connects his intellect and memories with trillions of other face offed brain scooped science heroes.

The only way for Brainiac 5 to be with Nia is if she agrees to also join the Big Brain. and why would they want her? A first level intellect with a caveman education from the boondocks of both time and space.

 

End of an era tonight. I've made no bones about my dissatisfaction with the last couple of seasons, but there was a time when I met every new episode of Supergirl with excitement and anticipation, which more often than not was well rewarded. Benoist, Leigh, and the rest of the splendid original cast always delivered, as did such later additions as McGrath, Rath, and Maines. Plus the show introduced the best screen Superman since Christopher Reeve, and the only Lex Luthor to challenge Michael Rosenbaum. Its sunlit hopefulness and positivity never flagged, and its legacy will transcend its failings. I look forward to spending these last couple of hours with Kara and company.
