What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I guess I'm a "newer generation" fan because I'm only 22. But the way I've come to understand it is arguing over what is canon and what is not in Star Trek is borderline nonsense because even official Star Trek media doubles back on its own established canon. From day one they made it up as the shows went along.

As long as people enjoy it and you're having fun, why should it matter what's part of the timeline and what's not? Just let people enjoy things they like, it's not hard.

Hope for the future, this young one is.

I was a kid at the time. Buuut closer than I would like.

It was a very different time. I just rewatched Charlie X and I find it amusing that they can't even name a woman's behind. Even Charlie X is incapable of saying it, he says "I did this" to Kirk who then can't say the word either. If the same scene had been filmed today Yeoman Rand would have just said: "Hey, stop patting my ass, will you?"

Geneviève Bujold saved Voyager.

By realizing quickly that she was miscast as Elizabeth/Nicole Janeway. Think about what would have happened if they'd been a few weeks or months in... and THEN they lost their captain!

Within-show logic would require Chakotay to become the Captain, but I have to think they would try and come up with some tortured way to get a different female captain on after Janeway's death.

Maybe they would find a random escape pod floating in the Delta Quadrant and find out - miraculously - it has a Starfleet captain inside?

That or have Bujold Janeway horrifically injured in a plasma explosion, her brain survives but her body is basically beef stew. The EMH has to transfer her consciousness to a recently brain dead officer, Lt. Kathryn Barfarini, played by Kate Mulgrew. Out of respect for her host body, the captain rechristens herself Kathryn Janeway.

Doable, I guess... but messy.

No biggie. They do Deathwish a year early. When Quinn dies, he (or Q) wants to show them their gratitude by giving them their captain back. But as it turns out, the Q aren't actually omnipotent and can't bring back the dead. They can, however, pull a captain Janeway from a parallel universe - our Janeway.

It's Voyager! They can do whatever they want, they don't even have to make sense. For example, Bujold dies (for whatever reason) and they find an escape pod (or whatever) with Kate Mulgrew in it (the only survivor from a previous grab by the Caretaker) she put herself in stasis because she was infected by the same disease that Harry and B'elanna got. She outranks everyone on Voyager so naturally, she takes over...So instead of being Janeway, she'll be someone else. What difference does it make?
