Star Trek Magazine Celebrates 15 Years of DS9!!!

If it weren't for the fact that I work in a bookstore, I probably would not have noticed that on the cover of the latest Star trek Magazine is a picture of Sisko, Odo, and Dax. When I looked at the magazine, I found that it was 15th anniversary issue dedicated to DS9. I picked it up and bought it right then and there. I haven't gone through the whole magazine since I just got home, but it has a main article on DS9 then there are separate articles on each season of DS9 along with an EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH AVERY BROOKS (a very rare occurance as DS9 fans can attest to) along with a new interview with Cirroc Lofton. They also have a section covering the DS9 Relaunch series along with covers of each of the books that take place during the series. So far I feel this is a must have for any DS9 fan and worth the $9.99 you'll have to pay to get it (I work at the book store so I got it for $6.99). Just thought I'd spread the word about this because I would not have known about this issue if I didn't casually glance at it at my job. So if you are at all interested, go to you're local big bookstore and pick it up.

Also in this issue: interviews with Karl Urban (the new Dr. McCoy) and Anton Yelchin (the new Chekov), a fiction extract called : Terok Nor: Day of the Vipers, an editor discusses the DS9 comics, and Larry Nemeck recalls the last day on the set of DS9

Anyway, just thought I'd spread the word.

Jack

ive looked in like 4 different bookstores, and all they have is last months copy...where did you find it?

Thanks for spreading the word.

Do they ask anyone any meangingful questions and/or questions that haven't been asked before in other interviews?

How long are the interviews with DS9 cast members?

Would be good if maybe you could post some excerpts or something to give an idea of the quality of the DS9 interview content which this magazine provides.

Well thanks for the heads up...I'll be looking for this 'Star Trek Magizine'. Do you work at a national chain like 'Borders'?

Sorry, I've been away from my computer for the last few days and haven't checked the thread.

The issue should be the current issue on the shelves at any chain that sells the magazine. I would imagine that if you still saw the old issue on the shelf that they didn't get the current issue yet but by now it should be there. Usually Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days when we get new mags so if it's not there today then tmrw it should be there at the latest.

The interviews with Avery Brooks and Cirroc Lofton are not very long, but it's worth checking out simply because interviews with Brooks are a rare thing. I'm at my other job now and I don't have the magazine with me but when I get home later tonight, I'll see if I can provide an excerpt. None of the articles are all that long but it's worth checking out.

I work at a bookstore chain but I don't want to mention the name because it might be construed as advertising and really, I just wanted to spread the word about the magazine and I don't care who you buy it from. I just know that DS9 fans will appreciate this issue and that they should know about it. I know I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for the fact that I just happened to glance at it by coincidence. Even though I'm a trek fan, Star Trek Magazine is too expensive at $9.00 an issue (I'm not sure about the subscription cost) to be worth getting most of the time unless the issue is focussed on something I care about such as DS9. I ussually don't bother even skimming through it if I don't see something I like on the cover.

I won't get home until late tonight, but when I do, I'll see if I can provide more details. I hope this answers your questions.

As promised, here are some more details and a couple of excerpts from the issue:

-Starting on page 31 we get an article called "Finding the New frontier" written by Andy Lane about the Genesis of DS9.

- This is follwed by the first of seven segments called The DS9 years which briefly summarizes some of the developments of each season and highlights certain episodes.

- Also, before each season, we get some trivia in a sidebar called "previously on Star Trek ..." which highlights some developments across the other series that might relate to whatever happens that particular season of DS9 (such as "Wolf 359 was first seen in BOBW" and "Baseball player Buck Bokai was first mentioned in TNG's "The Big Goodbye" are a couple of mentions for Season 1 of DS9).

- Furthermore, on the bottom of the page for each season we get another feature called "Sidesteps" which highlights all the DS9 novels that take place during that particular season

- On Page 35 we get an article called "An Unwilling Pupil" by Robert Greenberger which focusses on the Odo/Quarrk relationship and how Quark may have to take in some of the lessons he learned with Odo in Quark's new role as ambassador in the relaunch series.

- Page 38 begins the Avery Brooks segment followed by his interview with Paul Simpson at the FedCon Convention in Germany last summer. Here's a brief excerpt of the 2 page interview:

PS: What did you think of the character of Ben Sisko when you read the original script for Emissarry?

AB: I was fascinated by him. A man having to deal with loss, which to some extent I've experienced, although not that way. A man having to raise a child, and a male child to boot, by himself. A man who is required to defend humankind to some other intelligence in the universe. That is a fascinating trilogy of ideas to me. And therefore to discover who the man is in this three-pronged way I found challenging, so I said yes.

- On pg. 45 we get an article called "Time:The Final Frontier " by Robert T. Jeschonek focussing on the role of time travel in DS9.

-on page 51 we get an article called "Embracing the Star Trek Universe" by Keith R. A. DeCandido focussing on the decision to bring Worf and the Klingons onto the show and answering the criticism of DS9 "straying" away from Roddenberry's vision.

(good job, KRAD )

- on Page 55 we get an article called "Lessons in Love" by Jill Sherwin focussing on the intimate relationships we saw on Ds9

- Page 58 we get to Cirroc Lofton's interview. I'm assuming that this interview is also with Paul Simpson since it takes place at the FedCon convention and since the Avery Brooks interview and this interview are bookended by "Like Father..." - for Brooks and "...Like Son" for Lofton.

PS: Do you still see Avery Brooks a lot?

CL: I do. I'm very close with Avery's son. As a matter of fact we were roommates for a period of time, so he and I are really close. I'm really close with his family, so much so that we would take family vacations together. . . . Well, I would take vacations with his family and felt like his other son.

-pg 63 we get an article called "The Cleanest Finish" by David A. McIntee focussing on the decision to make DS9 a serial and on comparisons to DS9 as a "soap."

-pg69 we get an article called "Just Add Bajor" by Terri Osborne looking back at Sisko's roles as both a starfleet officer and the Emissary.
(Good job, Terri )

-pgs 72-73 we get "Star trek: Deep Space Nine: Station Roll call" blurbs for each character's development in the relaunch series.

-pg 75 we get an article called "All the Galaxy's a Stage" by David R. George III focussing on the Relaunch series.

(good job, David. although there appears to be a grammatical error/typo on the last sentence of the first paragraph.

It should begin : "Alternately known as the ST DS9 "relaunch" . . . " Instead, it's printed as "Alternately know as the ST DS9 "relaunch" . . ."

- pg 81 we get an article by Andrew Steven Harris about the DS9 comics

- pg 89 we get a fiction extract called : Star Trek:Terok Nor, Day of the Vipers introduced by James Swallow

- Finally we get "Endgame" on page 98 which is Larry Nemeck's segment on the final moments on the set of DS9

I hope this answers most of your questions. I think this issue is definitely worth getting for any DS9 fan.

The only think missing in my oinion is an interview with Nana Visitor. Otherwise, DS9 fans owe it to themselves to pick this up

Does this become available in the UK at some point? It sounds great. It was 15 years ago that it started though? Well bloody hell.

I'm not sure if your newstands carry it, but you can subscribe to the magazine I suppose. It says for UK go online at :www.titanmagazines.co.uk or call 0844 322 1263

I don't know if they would sell you individual issues, but there's no harm in trying.

I picked it up at lunch today. I haven't had time to do more than flip through it, but it looks like they did a really good job with it. I'm looking forward to digging into it tonight.

Like many features in Star Trek: The Magazine, the DS9 articles were superficial and offered few new insights into the series. The only really interesting (and new) piece was the Brooks interview.

I still found it worth getting. The articles were brief but insightful, KRAD's article was pretty good, and it's just meant to commemorate the 15th anniversary. It's not as comprehensive as say the DS9 Companion, but for those who don't have that it's the next best thing.

That's kind of the impression I'm getting from reading the summaries of the magazine in this thread. I don't care about relaunch novels or fan fictions or superfluous questions/info to the actors, many of which have been answered before anyhow. Most of Cirroc's and Brook's interview portions that they put on the DVD extras were already spent saying they are really close; don't see what the point is in the magazine rehashing that. I guess different fans have different DS9-related stuff that appeals to them though.

Does Brooks give the impression like he hates DS9 in the magazine interview? Ie: Like he does in his interview in the DVD extras commentary. Or has he changed his tune about that and just gives some stock answers that don't make his hate/disgruntledness with DS9 evident in the magazine?

I browsed through it yesterday. In my opinion, it is not worth the $10. As said above, everything gets very superficial treatment, and nothing in it is something I would want to read multiple times. For that price, I'll just buy a novel that can keep me happy for hours instead of minutes.

I didn't get that impression from the magazine interview, but I didn't get that impression from teh DVD extras, either. I've always gotten the impression that he was pleased with the quality of the show, although not necessarily pleased with how much of his life it took up while he was doing it. My feeling has been he felt it was a job that produced some good work, but still just a job. He makes positive comments about the show, its writers, and its legacy in the interview.

What comments have made you think he hates the show?

Saying stuff like he wanted to quit the show early on, and only stuck with it anyhow because he made a promise and wanted to set a good example to his son of keeping his word, was why he endured 7 years, and he was relieved to have survived it.

Well, I took that to mean he found the working situation demanding and most likely unpleasant, but I've never heard him make a negative comment about DS9 as a show; he's always been positive about what the show accomplished as far as I've seen.
