I was going to say it would need to be black and white, but I could be a technicolor Western, that inspired the later kids TV show, just like Buzz.

We actually did get to see some of the show Woody came from in Toy Story 2.

I know, I'm just saying if Pixar wanted to they could have an earlier movie in the timeline that inspired "Woody's Roundup"

Nahh, forget Woody. They should do a spy thriller, Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead.

Some people online seem to be complaining about this movie, but I'm 100% on board. I couldn't stand Toy Story 4, especially because TS3 ended the series so well, but I like this idea for a spin off.

This is the first Pixar film I've been excited for in awhile. The last Pixar film that I liked was Cars 3, and the last one that I loved was Inside Out, so hopefully Lightyear can show that Pixar is still capable of their old level of quality.

Yeah, sort of like legendary tales that end up inspiring westerns in general. I really think it could be cool. And while technically a spinoff, it would still be original material since Pixar's never set a movie in the old west. I think that honestly has more potential than Lightyear for sequels and such, if they want to go that way.

Haha, that'd be awesome. Never thought of that, but I think it would totally work.

OK, I can see where that could be fun.
That would be awesome. With so many toys and games getting movies, I'm kind of surprised they haven't done some kind of Potatohead movie.
Maybe this could be the start of a whole multiverse of Toy Story spin-offs.

I wonder if we'll see Zurg in Lightyear?

The difficulty of course would be in getting the rights from Mattel, I think. That still doesn't explain why they were able to use them and Barbie in the Toy Story movies, but they've must have negotiated special rights for side-characters.

All the "real" toys in the movie were granted permission by their respective owners. Barbie was not approved for Toy Story, Pixar being an unknown at the time. This may have led to the creation of Bo-Peep, but I'm not 100% on that. But, If the movie was bad it wouldn't really hurt Potatohead sales, so he was approved. Another toy to be disallowed was GIJoe since he's only in the move to be blown up, hence the invention of Combat Carl. Once Mattel realized how good the movie was, they arranged to give Barbie a big role in the sequel.

^ That makes sense. And as one would say, the rest is history.

Wasn't the Speak-and-Spell the real deal, or was that their own made up knock off?

Mr. Spell was invented by Pixar.

Speak and Spell is real, while the film version was just different enough.

My parents recently bought a new one.

There was a real Speak-N-Spell in E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, wasn't there? I wonder why Toy Story couldn't get one. Maybe they used up their licensing budget on the Potato Heads et al.

Although really, you'd think the toy companies would pay them for the product placement.

I wonder if they were out of production at the time?

That's an interesting thought, though I don't think it really matters. If anything retro products are all the rage now, with new versions of retro toys coming out all the time. I just heard about a version of the phone toy that will allow you to connect it to a real phone via bluetooth, for instance.

I mean, at the time if it was out of production then there is no real reason to spend money to license it. The license holder wouldn't benefit, and the production company could come up with a reasonable substitute without issue.

Yeah, there are a lot of devices with BT capability that I think are cool, especially with the kids I work with who could use the supportive contact. And, yeah, retro is coming back, especially since my parents just last year purchased a "Speak and Spell" toy recently produced. Lots of fun.

I wonder if it was just a character design issue, Mr. spell is shorter with a horizontal shape, that design might just fit the shots they were trying to compose better.
