That wasn’t the optics though. “Optics” refers to how something looks in real life/in practice regardless of intent. She was literally tied up in a chair as the ship was leaving if I remember correctly. She said “no” to all entreaties to join in the escape. If she had said yes and left with no mention of the cat thing, then that would be bad optics. I’m not sure this is a valid criticism of the writing.

The Protostar had one chance to escape and Gwyn had to leave the young Caitian behind. Even if she hadn't been restrained in the Captain's Chair and had been a fully willing member of the escape plan going back for the Caitian wasn't viable.
Joke taken too literally? Check.

Just watched the pilot with my target-demo son and he... absolutely LOVED it.

It kept his attention the whole time, he repeated lines that made him laugh and wanted to watch it again when it ended. He thought Dal was super cool and that "Rock Talk" was one of the cleverest puns ever written.

Star Trek gained at least one new fan tonight.

The story of the penal colony isn't over. I imagine that the Cat will be our eyes and ears to the plight of the prisoners as they are now useless (the colony was only to find the Protostar), and the Diviner will be looking for a way to (A) get this ship, (B) stop the example of fleeing criminals, i.e. Dal and Zero, (C) get back his daughter and restore the Vau N'Akat to glory or whatever.

Rok-Tahk wanted to free the other prisoners in this episode, and Zero is apparently a freedom fighter themself, so it's highly likely that they'll return to the colony before the end of this season to accomplish this goal.

As expected, it's basically Star Trek: Clone Wars / Star Trek: Rebels.

I enjoyed the first episode, but it doesn't feel particularly Star Trek-y to me yet. Still, early days.

I gave it a 5. I'm still unsure. The visuals were nice, the ship looks pretty neat, but otherwise it didn't really hold my interest well enough. I'll give it plenty of opportunities, but I'm going to need to see more to know.

Interestingly - there is far and away more detail in the 3D assets in this than there ever was in the Star Wars Animations, even Bad Batch.
Its really quality work in that regard, with a solid layer of style wrapped over it both in terms of textures and in the motion styles.

Thought the Protostar was pretty before, but now... Damn... Proper chills as they first walked into her guts.

One critique I have (and it’s something I feel about each of the new shows except LDS as well as the Kelvin films) is that it feels closer to Star Wars than to Star Trek.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it. But I also long for the days of episodes like The Measure of a Man. I think those days are gone for good and I wonder if any of the new shows will have any truly classic Trek episodes.

Measure of a Man may be too slow for kids today, you kinda need a faster pace to get kids interested.

Just thinking: Protostar could be a time-ship. Maybe it disappeared back a couple centuries, and its crew abandoned, and their descendants came to be the Alpha/Beta species reps we see here. Like "Children of Time" or something.

Edit: It would also explain the "all these years" line. The Diviner might have been searching for decades. While at the same time, Protostar could have just launched, or even not yet launched. Maybe Chakotay's ship will be Protostar before its temporal dislocation!

The bridge instantly reminded me of this Voyager bridge concept art.

I remember being captivated by this version as a kid when I first saw it in The Art of Star Trek. I wonder if someone on the creative team felt the same way.

I'd give it a solid 7/10. It got better as it went along, and Gwyn and Zero are my early favorites and seem like they will be interesting characters.

It kept me in suspense and had me wondering what was going to happen next. Good start to the series. I don't even have to use the qualifier "good for a kids' show". I thought it was good, period.

My niece, who's eight, loves it. So that's what someone from the target demographic thought.

There are whole episodes of Avatar & Korra that are basically the main character meditating to solve some internal issue they had.
And those are some of the most acclaimed kids animations ever.

Sure, but there was usually an action scene per episode in Avatar. It was not slow paced.
