What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Well, yes and no. The Expanse is absolutely modern SF, but I don't think it really has the same ethos as Star Trek.

Thanks for the recc!

Yeah, I meant more that The Expanse is actual science fiction. I haven't seen that on TV since 1st season B5, and before that, not since TOS/TAS.

Science Fiction is a pretty big tent. The Expanse is just one type. TOS is another Star Wars is yet a third. All are actual Science Fiction. And the argument has been made that Science Fiction is just a subset of Fantasy. (Not by me :p )

Star Wars is pretty clearly just a high fantasy story with some shallow SF veneer added. It has wizards, magic, swords, destiny, noble houses, emperors, ect.

Still a flavor of SciFi. SciFi has always borrowed from fantasy. Mad Scientists and technology are just wizards and magic with the serial numbers filed off.
Where would Dune and Asimov's Galactic Empire be without noble houses and emperors?

I kind of hate the criticism that the TNG films (or any films) are too much like just television, I kind of see where it's coming from but I think it's odd and unfortunate that some people dismiss television as just lesser than films.

A related but fairer critique is that the stakes/urgency is just too low, that I kind of agree with but even then the stakes don't have to be and shouldn't always be super-high.

My maybe controversial or just rare opinion, the original series had both more higher highs and lower lows than the 24th century shows.

Also I think Kirk was (over) idealized as much or more than Picard.

Agreed about the stakes. Some of the best episodes have stakes only be about a single person or not even have stakes at all... "AMOK TIME", "THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES", "The Measure Of A Man", "Family", "The Inner Light", "PROGRESS", "DUET", "THE VISITOR", "HARD TIME", "PROJECTIONS", "DEATH WISH", "SURVIVAL INSTINCT", "COGENITOR".

The same rule applies to movies.

By the same token, you can make the stakes be TOO large, too often. Current DOCTOR WHO was like that for a while, and while Chris Chibnall had a lot of faults as head writer for the current Doctor, one thing he did right was make the stakes more grounded and less grandiose. That allows room to breathe in a story.

There's a reason why the phrase 'less is more' exists.

LD season 1
LD season 2
PIC season 1
DISCO season 3
DISCO season 2
DISCO season 1

Disco season 1 is arguably the worst first season of any Trek. And Lower Decks season 1 is arguably the 2nd best first season of any Trek since TOS season 1.

I have yet to see many people if any who think Season 1 of DSC was the best of the three so far.

it’s terrible. And while season 2 is better…it’s not exactly a high bar to clear. And it doesn’t help that the best character (Pike) is just a season long guest star.
