Presumably in Foundation's Edge or Foundation and Earth - I don't think robots are mentioned at all in the original trilogy. The most advanced computer that I seem to remember was a teaching machine in Second Foundation but it plays no important role. Asimov did a pretty good job tying together his Foundation, Robots, and Eternity books in the sequels and prequels, they seemed unnecessary to me, but at least he probably benefitted financially. While I have reread the original trilogy - not for decades now - I have never felt inclined to revisit the newer novels.

I seem to remember an exchange in the first book between two scientists discussing the recent archeological discoveries by a third scientist on the third planet of some backwater, edge of the galaxy system and that he was arguing that it was evidence that was humanities birthplace, but then, yeah, nothing until they find Daneel on the moon several books later

Is this a spoiler thread or is there going to be about one? I'm only 8 minutes into the episode and am already a little "What?" but don't want to put it here if it's the wrong placr

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
The Zeroeth Law required Earth being turned into a radioactive slagheap.

Preserving Earther culture was costly and infantalizing man, or more accurately "boy".

That Null field No Man's Sky looking thing must be the vault, eh?

So the narrator is Doornick from 35 years on the future, and she talks about Hardin and the Mule - so they must be greatly compressing the timeline. And speeding up the delevopement of mental powers. Hardin is in the cast list for 9 episodes, and IMDB lists Anecreon soldiers so that must happen this season. No listing for The Mule but maybe that's to keep who he is a surprise. I had assumed they'd do time jumps between seasons - first season Seldon & Doornick, second season Hardon & Anacreon, et .

Interesting having Expanse like "Belters" evolved for the null g of interstellar flight. Making the audience accept the idea of mutants early so it's not a shock when The Mule shows up? Or more evidence of genetic mastery with the cloned Emperor's?

Oh shit, so they have Anacreon as a semi independent Vassel right from the start, not as an imperial planet that rebelled and created its own kingdom. Makes sense if they are compressing the timeline so much.

HAHAHAHA THE PERSON EXPLODING BOX BEAM.

Damn, that ambassador from Thespis has been hitting the spice hard.

The Imperial guards are big fans of Iron Man from the looks of those helmets.

    Hey, it's Siddig El Fadil!

They are live broadcasting the trial?!?! That seems counter productive.

Ah, so that is the Vault.

So they are totally changing Hardon, from just the first mayor taking the "obvious path" predicted by Seldon for the first two crises to an individual upsetting the plan. Maybe they'll turn her into The Mule...

Nope, he didn't combine his Robot, Galactic Empire, and Foundation stories into a unified timeline until the '80s sequels.

As I recall, the elements he drew on from The End of Eternity took some liberties with the events of the book (like redefining what the end goal of the time travel was), so it was questionable whether it was really meant to be in continuity or if he was just borrowing some of its ideas and using them in a new context. But then, TEoE is a book about changing history, so maybe it's just an alternate version of events.

Watching the second episode now. I'm liking the little hints/foreshadowing
"He's a psychohistorian, he can't read minds"", the personal shield that is an important plot point in future stories

With the reveal halfway through this episode I'm wondering what rights to what characters Apple actually has.

They did a really good job making Terrance Mann look like an old Lee Pace. In the trailers I actually thought it was Pace.

Edit:. Ok, that was an unexpected twist at the end.

the terrorist attack in the first episode? And that Raych killing him was at his request, because of his illness he dies from in the book - looked like he took a pill at dinner

Siddig played the role of the regent in the book, the man who was the real power behind the throne but of course, with the addition of the imperial cloning such a person is no longer needed.

"You'll be dead within the year if you execute him/me." was said by Seldon in the book and not Gaal Dornick.

Gaal Dornick shouldn't know about the mule who lived more than a century after he/she was dead.

In his last year, Seldon was in a wheelchair and that's at that time that he recorded all the holograms of the vault but I guess in this version anything can happen, anything at all.

There are definitely (undercover) robots in the empire.

Why do people keep calling the emperor, "empire"?

If Demerzel is Daneel then the cruelty is a bit out of place.

I think because there are 3 of them and so they use the “plural” term.

The girl looks good in the flash forwards if she’s around 50 at that point.

@wayoung: They had better not compress the timeline too much or they won't have anything left for the second season (if there's one).:D

    Which girl?
You're not confusing Salvor Hardin (the woman on Terminus) and Gaal Dornick, are you? Two separate characters, although I suspect the former is the daughter of the latter, gestated in vitro or surrogate from a stored egg or embryo.

Apologies. I thought they were the same people. Takes me a few episodes to catch the names

It's so different from the book that I have a hard time keeping things straight.

They don't even look the same and they are addressed by different names. Did you think they cast another actress to play the character when she's older?

In the books, Raych died before they went to Terminus, which is why he's never mentioned in the Trilogy.

It does require a bit of attention. I tend to watch with subtitles turned on. I have no problem with the gender swaps and casting people of colour. I wish they could have found a recurring role for Sid to play.

Besides the trilogy being written long before the prequels, of course.

That's the "out-universe" explanation, mine is the "in-universe" one.
