The script for AF had so much promise, but it just seemed to wallow in mediocrity on film. That’s probably why director Gerd Oswald was not invited back to TOS.
"The Alternative Factor" is such a miserable, assaultive viewing experience. Burn every copy. I cannot think of a TOS that would make a more appropriate winner of this game.
To my eyes, much worse than three-time champ "And The Children Shall Lead", which at least has some so-bad-its-funny parts.

It may have been a bad omen of things to come when John Drew Barrymore skipped out on his contract to play Lazarus.

I don't know how they managed to live with themselves later knowing that they were complicit in the murdering of their own parents. Not to mention those two guys who were beamed into empty space.

Answer: The kids hypnotized the transporter's computer as well... Sounds stupid but not more than the episode itself...
I can buy the transporter operator seeing something other than what his instruments detect, like how Sulu thought he was about to fly the ship into daggers.
But as far as we saw, the kids can only do that while they were in visual contact with their victim. So this scene actually shows Kirk, on a rare occasion, being incompetent.
