Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

I honestly don't get the point of NFTs.

But what do I know? I still don't get the point of the stock market, etc.

For those of us who don't do Twitter can someone share with the rest of the class? What's an NFT and why am I upset about it?

NFTs are digital "things" that are unique, i.e. there are no copies and you can't make copies ( the same as with an original painting, there is ever only one original). It's the new thing everybody goes crazy about.

Thank you. I was never hip to the new stuff.

NFTs…

I tried to get tickets to see the English language version of the movie on Wednesday night. Sold out. Tried the smaller theater that shows the film in English with German subtitles. Sold out. I took the day off work, already. And, speculating on getting my boss to just give me Thursday off instead of Wednesday, I looked at the Thursday night English language screening. Sold out.

I get the feeling this might turn out to be a hit.

That is indeed encouraging news. Hopefully the film opens really well in Europe and that good word of mouth spreads to the States.

NFT = non-fungible token
What are NFTs and why are some worth millions? - BBC News

In 42 BCE, Publilius Syrus wrote "Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it." Note the worth does not necessarily relate to scarcity or uniqueness. Never forget tulip mania... Money is a giant Ponzi scheme that substitutes tokens for barterable items or services but shush, don't tell anyone. I think NFTs are silly but I was also wrong about cryptocurrency.

Strange, when i booked my ticket for this Wednesday ( sadly only the German dubbed version) the theater was near empty. Maybe it will fill up some more until Wednesday but i also wanted to go see Shang Chi on Saturday but when i booked tickets the theater was also quite empty. Maybe it's just my neck of the woods.

Wait, I thought NFT were just another kind of cryptocurrency?

Either way, this is a really bad look.
Mapes is in the movie, Feyd is not. Whether he'll be in the second, should they make it, is conjecture at this point since it hasn't even been written.
As conjecture goes though, it seems like a fairly safe assumption that he will be. Even in the novel he doesn't even become slightly relevant until the second half of the book anyway, so conversely his absence from the first movie isn't a serious indicator either.

I wonder if he will then have his gladiatorial fight with the captured Atreides fighter, which he almost loses. I don't think so because there's too much subtext going on in this fight and the second part has action enough but it would still be cool since it is one of my favorite scenes. However i'm 100% convinced he will be in the second movie, if only to show how far Paul has gotten.

To be fair, it could also be that my town is the outlier here. For example, I didn't look up any of the screenings of the dubbed version. Might just be that Freiburg has a lot of Dune fans, or just a lot of English-speaking Dune fans.
