No, it's not. It's about telling stories.

The futurey stuff is the back drop used to tell those stories.

It has nothing to do with preserving anyone. It's a bunch of corporate execs trying to work out how to make more money off the dead.

But it's not them. It's a stand-in with a dead persons face ghoulishly superimposed onto them. In the case of Majel Barrett it would just be a computer or sound engineer cutting and pasting old sound clips to form sentences.

It's not memorializing or paying tribute the dead. It's Bernie Lomaxing them so they can continue to make money off them.

 

That may be how you see Sci-Fi, especially Star Trek; but many of us watch Sci-Fi & especially Star Trek to see glimpses of the future and future tech.

ST:TOS showed off tons of tech that inspired and became real world tech.

Same with ST:TNG.

 

People say "many" when the right word is "some."

 

No one's going to be making any money out of Majel's voice being used. It's a nod to her history with the show.

I very much doubt it would attract even one extra viewer / advertiser / sponsor.

Not all uses of likenesses and audio samples would be so benign, and there does need to be regulation and oversight, but this wouldn't be in any way a cash grab.

 

Nope, just dumb and unnecessary.

- TOS inspired the automatic Sliding Door
- ReConfigurable Touch-Screen interfaces on modern day computing can thank TNG & LCARS
- ODN Cable Network = Modern Day Fiber Optic Cables used for networking & telecommunications
- Isolinear Chips = Modern Day solid state Memory Cards
- TNG Era Computer Core = Modern Day Server Room
- TNG Era Voice Interface = Modern Day AI powered Natural Language Voice Assistants
- TNG Era Replicators = Inspired modern day 3D Printers
- TNG Era Holodeck = Inspiration for modern VR Googles as a stepping stone to a real Holodeck

Some, yes. The above two were not.

But, your point is well taken. I don't find Trek inspiriting for future tech any more. The real world has surpassed it in terms of my interest and development.

 

Star Trek has always been a foundation for exploring how advanced technology will be used.

Reconfigurable Matter and Borg NanoProbes are inspirations for real world Nano-Tech.

Same with 3D Holographic Projection, people are getting inspired to make that real.

 

Star Trek is not inspiring that, at least from what I am reading of technology developments. It is happening regardless of Star Trek. So, no, I like Star Trek but not for future tech. In fact, it often is more restrictive in its portrayal than what I think is possible.

 

I think that's a limitation more of this era of writers creativity starting with Discovery and moving foreward.

@Deks I know you have tons of complaints on the lack of technological creativity of recent Star Trek Writers.

 

Nah, I've seen it since TNG forward. Deks makes some good points but that just shows that technology has outpaced Trek in terms of real world application. The writers are confined because "Star Trek" has to look a certain way.

 

I just think they need better writers, writers who are actual technologists or consult real technologists who have a creative mind.

 

Probably, but I can't help that. Any more than I find Trek inspiring for tech.

Nor would I focus on the tech if I was. Star Trek is about characters for me, not what whiz-bang inventions we can technobabble describe. As much as I love technology, it isn't enjoyable like people are. Star Trek did best when the tech just existed as part of the story. Communicators were not original to Star Trek, but they were a nice visual shorthand of them utilizing it without commentary. If that's inspiring then by all means. But, the innovations I have seen in Trek of late feel like they are following, not leading, not inspiring. Which is fine, because that isn't what Trek is to me.

 

I guess that's where you and I differ.

I hold them to equal value.

Then I'm hopeful that the Current Trek writing staff satisfies your desires.

For me, they are barely delivering on the tech front.

 

Well, better than TNG ever did at the moment. But, few things satisfy me completely when it comes to character work.

Technology is more interesting in real life.

 

If it comes down to a choice between a writer who can write compelling drama, exciting action and interesting characters vs a writer who knows technology, I know which one I want.

Hint: It's not the tech guy.

 

Yeah, not if you want more than a handful of people to watch it.
