MLB 2021 season: Corn-Driven Humidity

Damn, end of an era.

That said, I didn't realize they were still making them. I haven't bought baseball cards in years and years...

I do wonder about the economics of it all. The MLBPA said they will be drawing four times the revenue, which means cards are going to be at least four times more expensive under this new deal.

That and trading cards as an industry has been out of popularity for a long time. At least for physical cards for sports. That's why I was surprised they were still making cards, at least physically, and honestly I don't see the point of digital cards.

I realize that the gaming industry took a massive hit due to the pandemic, but I am so fucking sick of every other ad on TV being for online casinos or sportsbooks.* I'd sooner suffer through a one-hour marathon of Liberty Mutual commercials.

*And it seems like the ads that aren't for gambling are mostly Joe Namath and Jimmy Walker (who both look like they escaped from a mortuary) pitching Medicare benefits.

And then there's the 1986 Sportflics cards, which used lenticular 3D printing to create the illusion of motion (a batter hitting, a pitcher throwing, with the third frame always being their headshot). I vaguely remember having a few of these, but can't remember how I got them.

In the 90's I had Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck, and Score cards. Score cards were like $.89 a pack, which helped the $20 I earned mowing lawns last longer. I gave my entire (rather large) collection to my little brother. He probably threw them away.

I remember the first baseball cards I collected, probably 1984. I indiscriminately tossed the cards in a shoebox and ate the gum. The gum was what mattered most.

Anyone else remember that baseball/Looney Tunes crossover series Upper Deck did in...'91, I think? They had a different storyline playing out on either side which featured players like Ken Griffey Jr. and a few others (I'm blanking on who else was in there). I think I had about 50% or so of them, so I only ever got parts of each story.

I did some digging and I'm reminded that there were actually three different sets: One where it was just them, one where it was them with Nolan Ryan and Reggie Jackson, and one where it was them with Jim Abbott and both of the Ken Griffeys. There was also a football series but I don't remember that one (probably because it's football). And apparently at least the first set was illustrated by Chuck Jones, which I had no idea until now!

You can take a look them at these eBay auctions. Link 1. Link 2. Link 3. Link 4.

I always liked Donruss better, more colorful.

Reds and Cubs in the corn field next year.

Oh, sweet Christ. The Cubs are stupidly popular in eastern Iowa (despite being blacked out on MLB.tv, because we're considered a "local market" to Chicago despite it being three hours away). Secondhand tickets for the first game went as high as $5,200 on the day of the game (Facebook Marketplace was ... interesting, to say the least). They're going to get near five figures for a Cubs game in Dyersville.

There's fans and then there's needing a rubber room.
