What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Klingons cut their hair in the period when they overcompensated the effects of the Augment virus. Each House went to extreme in trying to out-Klingon the others, in the physique of the top members as well as the styling of the ships. But after the war, when the followers of T'kuvma assumed power, brought the Empire together and spread the philosophy of "remain Klingon," things changed back.

In my head "Remain Klingon" was a direct result of the Augment Virus since so many millions of their species had been made to look human in appearance and T'Kuvma found this repellent along with the Empire's cultural contacts with outside powers including the Federation. Kol himself said that the events in Season 1 of DSC were the "second" attempt by humans to rob Klingons of their identity so while the series has gone out of its way to avoid directly mentioning the Augment Virus and its effects the writers may have found a way to reference it in a more subtle manner.

Controversial Star Trek opinions:

- Generations was a fantastic film and Kirk's death packed a punch
- Captain Jellico had a lot of fair points and the crew were being quite whiny about some fair requests from him
- Voyager's EMH went from being a great character to thoroughly annoying for the last two seasons (but then the last two seasons were dire).
- Enterprise's last two seasons were as good as DS9's sixth and the show deserved to carry on (minus Mayweather). And its first two really weren't that bad.
- Discovery had a questionable first season and has been dire since its second (it's the only Trek show I've stopped watching and have no interest in resuming) and it's butchering the Trek concept, as is happening much under Kurtzman.
- Lower Decks is cringe and mostly not funny.
- Making Data suicidal in Picard at the mere age of 43 was a stupid explanation that soured what could have been a stellar concept.

The only unreasonable thing Jellico did was try to create a fourth shift from scratch mere hours from battle. If the Enterprise had had to fight while staffed by a team of people who weren't used to working together yet... it probably wouldn't have gone well.

Everything else Jellico did was fine. He was even right about Picard: the decision to acknowledge Picard's actions was not his (or Riker's) to make.

And he was definitely right about Troi needing to dress like an officer while on the bridge.

Voyager's EMH went from being a great character to thoroughly annoying for the last two seasons (but then the last two seasons were dire).

Let's not forget "Latent Image", where he gets bent out of shape about an action that essentially saved his life.

Enterprise's last two seasons were as good as DS9's sixth and the show deserved to carry on (minus Mayweather).

I don't think that's controversial around here. Enterprise had finally found its footing when it was canceled.

Discovery had a questionable first season and has been dire since its second (it's the only Trek show I've stopped watching and have no interest in resuming) and it's butchering the Trek concept, as is happening much under Kurtzman.

Alas, dark, edgy, and serialized seems to be the "in" thing these days. And remember, there were people who said that TNG butchered the Trek concept, too. DS9 as well, come to think of it.

Lower Decks is cringe

Yes it is. But I still enjoy it for what it is.

Making Data suicidal in Picard at the mere age of 43 was a stupid explanation that soured what could have been a stellar concept.

That's a little like the issue of keeping Riker at commander for years... an action with a real world explanation. Brent Spiner was too old to play the ageless android, so the character was retired. It's nice to know that Spiner himself still has a place in the franchise.

Lately (even though Discovery happens before TOS) it seems Vulcans started growing beards and Klingons losing hair :) At least in Kurtzman's concept....
I guess no one told Kras he should have a full head of hair. Dude, Combover fail.

There are indeed, but usually Vulcans are shaved .... also in the image above Spock's beard it sure looks like glued :)

I read somewhere that usually bearded people will get bald faster than men with less beard.
As far as I see Nimoy always had hair therefore maybe fake beard and Kras the Klingon had plenty of facial hair -in conclusion less hair on his roof lol....

Fun bit of trivia... after Sisko grew his own goatee, it was kind of obvious that the one he had in "Explorers" was fake.

If there is any real correlation it's probably the other way around, IE balding people will have a tendency to grow a beard more than people who have all their hair.

Growing a beard isn't inherently logical. Logic is a thinking tool. IF one's goal is less energy expended on grooming, then it would be logical not to shave.

Beards, however, are itchy and require care not to get nasty. So if one's goal were to be not itchy or have to expend care on a beard, it would be logical not to have one.

What are one's values/goals? Then we can determine if a course of action is logical or not, yes?

What would be most logical would be to do what requires the least care. That is, a closely trimmed beard. Shaving requires daily effort, trimming a beard can be done every couple of weeks. And, a trimmed beard requires minimal care: you wash your face the same way you would if you were clean shaven.

However, Vulcans might choose to respect certain fashions (such as being clean shaven) for purposes of maintaining positive relations with others. Looks don't matter much to them, but they know that less logical species might disagree.

  • "Once you have eliminated the hair, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the skin."
  • As a Vulcan I always enjoyed shaving, to apply the shaving foam on the wet skin.
  • Somehow I like the sensation of "freshness" in the morning after a nice clean shave :)
  • Only after I finished shaving I'll attend to my breakfast... not the other way around. It wouldn't make any sense so it will be of course illogical.
  • Discipline and tidiness are the main things that are characteristic to our species :)
