News The Wheel of Time Coming to Amazon Video

Hmm, nope.

Book 4
sees Egwene with Rand, Mat, and Moiraine in the Aiel Waste, where Rand learns the Aiel history while Egwene especially and Moiraine to a lesser extent start being trained ('put upon' perhaps?) by the Aiel Wise Women. But there's three other groups of characters with three other plotlines; Perrin in the Two Rivers gets just as much time, as does Nynaeve and Elaine in Tanchico. Min at Tar Valon gets less page time overall, but still makes up a solid chunk of story

Book 5
Continues with the same character setups. Perrin and the Two Rivers plot is absent entirely, but Min and company get a lot more 'screentime' to go with Rand & Company and Nynaeve & Company.

And yeah, there's a bunch of brand-new characters, but that's part of The Wheel of Time - there's an absolutely incredible number of named characters of varying importance, and expecting Jordan to not introduce a whole bunch more considering where the story goes in Book 4 is rather silly.

Hmm.

"Detail for the sake of detail." Aka world-building.

You can build a world without going into ponderous and unnecessary descriptions of every little aspect of that world.

Sanderson understands that and has demonstrated it with his own original works, whereas Robert Jordan didn't.

If I live long enough to get there in my to-read pile I'll get back to this series eventually. I fell off around book 4, no reason.

I see that Tor is reissuing the books with new TV tie-in covers.

I still remember when Book #3 hit the NYT bestseller list for the first time. It was Tor's very first hardcover bestseller, so Tom Doherty took the whole staff out to dinner at this cozy Irish pub to celebrate.

Mind you, there were only about twenty of us on staff at the time!

I spent at least a decade wondering if Robert Jordan would live long enough to finish the series. Sadly he didn't, but the conclusion by Brandon Sanderson was completely well done. Overall, the series is amazing and well worth reading. Not perfect. Nothing is. But in my top 10.

Sadly/Thankfully Jordan realized his health was declining and he probably would not get to the finish line and I believe he shifted focus to just making notes and where plotlines where planned to go, etc... Sanderson did a really marvelous job stepping in and finishing things off though.

I am optimistic about this series. I think the casting choices were very interesting and reflect a very diverse world which I know at the time (and probably once it airs) will receive some backlash sadly. I think there's an awful lot of 'book world/plot' to draw on and will be interesting to see how this is adopted/truncated/leaned out/etc... because just adopting everything from the books would be like 500 episodes.

I'm gonna be honest, that main cast photo is... horribly underwhelming. Still hoping for something good as I'm slowly doing a re-read but not feeling optimistic. Still, considering the budget and the apparent love of the world from the creators... well, we'll see.

Needs an exploding background.

TBH, as much as I adored the series, what would draw me to a series would be:
#1: Mat. Nuff said.

#2: The whole female/male conflict and how it plays out. As far as I'm concerned this was the most compelling ongoing thread in the series that set it apart from everything else I've read.

There were other great things, but those two are what would make me watch.
OK, Perrin is a close third, and I'm not knocking Rand, Nynaeve, Egwiene, Moiraine, Lan...

Jesus, Lan. What's this story without Lan?

Shit. All the characters are what made the story great. This better be character focused.

Never read the books, but as someone new to the series that looks pretty good. Might have to move Eye of the World up on my to read list.

I'm cautiously optimistic as the material certainly has a lot of potential. The footage certainly looks mostly OK, if a little flat and lacking in style from a cinematography standpoint...but all that said I'd be lying if I said I was massively invested in the IP, so my expectations are very much tempered.

For context: I can't remember how far I got into the series the last time I attempted it (maybe book 4 or 5?), I just remember the whole thing feeling meandering and repetitive* and I eventually just got burnt out and lost interest. A 15(?) book series sounds epic, but it's also quite the barrier to entry since I gather there's things in book one that doesn't pay off until literally the last entry...by which time I would likely have forgotten that it was set up at all. I also heard there was a rather notorious "slump" in the series and I'm pretty sure it was *after* the point at which I gave up, so that's even less encouraging for any potential second attempt at a read through...

* Like literally repetitive; the author repeats the same phrases so often that if you made a drinking game out of how often certain characters say either "blood and ashes" or "the wheel weaves as the wheel wills", your liver will likely bite the dust somewhere around the half-way mark of book 1.

I've never read the books, to me the trailer looks pretty generic. "Flat" in terms of of visuals as the guy above said seems about right? I'll watch it if people say it's good, but the trailer didn't make me interested in the way, say, the first trailer for The Witcher did.

Same here. Although The Witcher didn't really set my world on fire even after watching the first episode and having enjoyed the third game immensely.

I think I managed to get to Book Five, maybe Six, before giving up… for the same reasons @Reverend mentioned above. It felt like nothing was particularly happening, and more and more characters were being introduced for no reason.

Ironically, I was getting the same feeling out of GRRM and the ASOIAF books, since he admitted being a fan and good friend of the Wheel of Time author. Thankfully, it seems he’s tempered that tendency a bit, and is now bringing (hopefully) the story to a close… in about 20 years or so.

Cheers,
-CM-

I had some time to kill today and so I started deep-diving into coverage about the series, and I'm starting to get a lot more excited about it in spite of my disinterest in and ambivalence towards the books, potentially creating a situation similar to Peter Jackson's Middle-earth Saga where I love an adaptation of the story but not the literary source material from which it originated.

A new trailer just dropped.

Looks good. And now I'm definitely going to be starting Eye of the World once I finish the Justice League collection I'm reading.
