MLB 2021 season: Corn-Driven Humidity

There's a quote from Connie Mack that Ken Burns used in Baseball that summarized Mack's business philosophy for much of his time as owner of the Philadelphia Athletics. I think Bob Nutting is probably an adherent to this philosophy given the way he's handled the Pirates the last several seasons.

"It is more profitable for me to have a team that is in contention for most of the season but finishes about fourth. A team like that will draw well enough for the first part of the season to show a profit for the year. And you don't have to give the players raises when they don't win."
(edit: of course when Mack said this, there weren't divisions, just all eight AL teams, so finishing fourth wouldn't be horrible. I guess the modern equivalent would be 1-2 games out from the lead in the Wild Card race.)

Majority of Dodger players don’t want Trevor Bauer back.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021...-players-on-dodgers-dont-want-bauer-back.html

“A majority of players do not want [Trevor] Bauer back under any circumstances,” writes Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times, who cites “two people with knowledge of Dodgers clubhouse dynamics.” Bauer’s paid administrative leave from the Dodgers, which the club has previously extended twice, runs through tomorrow. In late June, news surfaced of an ex parte temporary restraining order a San Diego woman obtained against Bauer after she alleged sexual assault.

Guardians is a strange choice for a baseball team name.

I also give a nonzero chance there will eventually be a white supremacist organization that calls itself “Guardians of America”, so they are living dangerously with that choice.

They hoover up dollars from merchandising with this name change, and they'll hoover them up again if they have to change down the road.

Cha-ching!

Copywriting and copyright are two entirely different things. ;)

Edit: And in any event, it would be a trademark thing, and, no, public services are not applicable to be trademarked.
I was joking, using YouTube method of dealing with stuff.

You know what's amazing?

My man Shohei!

Last night: 7 innings pitched, 1 earned run. A hit, an RBI, and a stolen base.

So whose uniform do you think he will look good in when the Angels trade him for magic beans or he becomes a free-agent? :p

The Oakland Athletics acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin from the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, the teams announced. In return, the Athletics sent minor leaguers Greg Deichmann and Daniel Palencia to Chicago.

Deichmann, a 26-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder, was hitting .300 with four home runs and 34 RBIs for Las Vegas this season, his first in Triple-A. He has a .432 on-base percentage and an .881 OPS. He was a second-round draft pick in 2017 out of LSU.

Right-hander Palencia, 21, is in his first professional season after signing with Oakland as an international free agent out of Venezuela in February 2020. He was 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA in six starts for Class A Stockton, compiling 14 strikeouts and six walks in 14⅓ innings.

Meh.

Moreno will not let him go.

He'll drive a truckload of money up to his house.

Meh.

I automatically don't trust anyone who mashes in Las Vegas; that park is a goddamn launching pad.
