Starship design history in light of Discovery

It's funny to see him say things like that because when I think of an Eaves design I think of angular lines and his nacelles since well before Discovery have been the opposite of 'round'. I'm not really a fan of his work tbh. Even if he manages to design something that looks nice, practicality or common sense tends to go out the window. That's what makes a true designer, for it to look good and fit within the world and make sense.

I'd be happy to talk more about this, but this is not the forum for that. Perhaps you could start a topic in the Trek Tech section?

Within a split second of reading that, my mind jumped from "We can call that the Eaves thread?" to "Let's class it Eaves class!"...
More on-topic, STO calls the Phase II variant of the Constitution-class refit the Jefferies class.

On Memory Beta, the Constitution refit is also known as Enterprise-subclass. As in, the USS Enterprise was remained a Constitution-class starship but its new configuration was also called Enterprise-class. (Like how each new VW Golf is still a Golf but also a Golf Nth generation).

Bottom line, my brain informally calls the refit of the Constitution class seen in Discovery, the Eaves-class.

Because that's how the designs were already heading towards that in the 24th century so he just expanded on it.

The non-round nacelles in Discovery specifically was a mandate from the original showrunner, Bryan Fuller, it wasn't Eaves's choice, he was told not to use round nacelles. If he had been allowed to design what he wanted, with in the confines of the era, we probably would have gotten some designs closer to TOS, but with more detail.

Eaves knows trek history so that's why he wanted to use round nacelles.
His NX-01 concept design used round nacelles, and his shuttle concept designs for ST09 all use round nacelles, some very close to TOS Connie nacelles.

He also designed the Phoenix in First Contact, and guess what? Round nacelles.

I liked all his designs for the Starfleet vessels in season 1. However, I think a lot of them would have looked better as post-TUC vessels rather than pre-TOS. The only one that looks like it completely fits the time period is the Engle class with its distinct NX-01-inspired features. But my gripe is that by this time, I would have thought that most Starfleet vessels would have resembled the TOS Enterprise rather than a ship from 100 years before, or ships that look like they’d fit in to the pre-TNG era. Of course, my feelings are entirely based on the idea that the TOS Constitution class represents the base design of all Federation ships from 2250-70, an idea that has been the basis for almost all fan fiction for the last 40-some years.

When in retrospect it now turns out that the NX-class became the base design for all to come and other starship classes of later decades and centuries were just variations on the theme of ships like Archer's Enterprise.

The 1701-D is prettier but neither is going to win a franchise beauty contest. I do like the size comparison, though, and I think a 32nd century starship would look that radically different after another 800 years of spacecraft evolution.
