I'd have to agree, especially in regards to the argument that TAS isn't canon. There could be an entire academic journal dedicated to arguing the canonical status of various mediums of Star Trek. I have always prescribed to a rather simplistic perspective on the matter - the officially produced movies and shows are canon, everything else is not. That isn't to say I don't love a good comic book or novel, in fact just the opposite. Where I draw the line in the canon argument is when we start debating which episodes or movies are considered canon. At that point we are simply picking teeth over a rather subjective discussion. In regards to a live action LDS in particular, I don't feel it is needed. I'm no writer, but the tone and atmosphere of the show doesn't feel like it would immediately translate well to a live action medium. It'd be forced, in my opinion.
Lower Decks in live action would be the most fun they could do with that show. I think it would very interesting and possibly a way of having fun with the cartoon format. Canon or not, Lower Decks can work in multiple formats.
Just a crazy tough: what about a love action/cartoon mix like they used to do in those 70s kids movies? I know, pretty crazy...
Honestly I think this could work decently well. It welcomes some fun treknobabble imo. Possibly have an actor pop up in a LDS episode and the animated characters can make jokes along the lines of "Why do they look like that"
I don't personally see the need for it and I'm not sure I understand why others do. Do some people feel embarrassed about watching a cartoon perhaps? For me, it is what it is. I no more want to see a live action Lower Decks than I want to see an animated season of Picard.
It's the need to legitimise it that I find strange. Every review thread for it contains a 'poster' and none of them use images from the episode. Not to point at yourself, but there does seem to be a portion of people who feel self-conscious about it being animated.
What an odd way to look at it. Do you think the purpose of all cameos and crossovers is for one entity to legitimize the other? Sure, from a cynical marketing standpoint that might sometimes be the case, but from the viewer’s perspective it‘s also just … you know, fun. When they did “Trials and Tribble-ations” and “Flashback”, did you think that was to legitimize one show through the other? Wasn‘t it just to have some fun and maybe further the idea of Trek being one connected universe?
I don't think that, but the OP said so. A live action version would help to canonise Lower Decks. Right there in post 1.
Of course Picard could very well appear in season 2, perhaps with the enterprise meeting up with his old pals on the Titan
Oh okay, gotcha. Then I'm with you in that I don't think there's a need to somehow canonize or legitimize Lower Decks through a cameo in a live action show. The OP also says it would just be cool to see the voice actor reprise their characters. That's where I see myself, personally. Just a theory, but throughout the 90s there was this discussion in fandom about the canon status of the original animated series. When they started to include some of its elements on Enterprise it was seen as a sign from the rights holders that they were no longer thinking of it as non-canon. I guess a similar way of thinking might be going on here. But yeah, I don't see any need for it either. Would just be hella cool.
According to the tie-in stuff, Picard left the Enterprise-E and accepted promotion to Admiral in order to spearhead the Romulan rescue effort in 2381... which is exactly when Lower Decks season 2 probably takes place (season one being set 2380) That said, I'm not expecting much in the way of modern Trek references in LDS. They managed a whole season without mentioning Michael Burnham even once. And it makes a lot of the "nuTrek haterz" happy with it's authentic TNG look and sound effects.
It might be funny to do one live action bit with all the actors within the constraints of one of the animated episodes; but given what they are doing with lower decks no I don't think a full-on live action translation would work very well.
I mean, I totally think they should do a live action episode once when they've gone into the "Delta Matter Dimension" or whatever.
