anyone still have and prefer the Director's/Collectors Edition DVDs of the movies?

Just wondering if anyone else besides me still love and prefer the old Directors Edition/Collectors Edition DVDS for the old Star Trek movies?

Earlier today in the mail I got the Directors/Collectors Edition DVD of Wrath of Khan and why I love it is because of the text trivia track and the extra scenes including the hallway scene of Spock and Kirstie Alley talk about Kirk and Spock saying something about not everyone is perfect such as in human from Earth yada yada.

sure the DVD cases are a bit chunky but i jut prefer their bonus features over the newer releases in the slimmer DVD cases which barely have any bonus features
 
The Director's Edition of Wrath of Khan was remastered and released on Blu-ray back in 2016, just in case you weren't aware.

I have all ten of the 2-disc DVDs, and think they did a good job, especially on the TOS films. Definitely worth holding onto.

I kept my VHS set of the first 6 films. I got the first 3 on VHS for my birthday in 1986. They were the first generation of releases they did to the general public (back when TMP was 39.95 on VHS and TWOK and TSFS were 29.95--which was actually inexpensive, VHS tapes back then could cost upwards of 70 or 80 dollars). Then I got the first generation releases of TVH and TFF on VHS. My copy of TUC was originally designed as part of the VHS box set they eventually did (I don't know if TUC had a separate VHS release or if it was always designed to be part of the box set). But I'll always keep the first 6 on VHS.

I do have the 10 films they released as the Special Editions on DVD, and I'll probably always hold on to those since they are basically a set. I have gotten the Blu-Ray directors edition of TWOK, and I got Blu-Rays of TSFS, TVH and the 4 TNG films. I think by and large the Blu-Rays of those particular films are of the 'final' product that probably won't see new cuts coming out with additional or upgraded scenes. And I have the Blu-Rays of the 3 Abrams films.

I've held out buying a Blu-Ray copy of TMP because I want to get the DE of TMP on Blu-Ray (which I hope will be released along with the upcoming 4K release). I've also held out on TUC because I heard they just released the theatrical version on Blu-Ray and I'm waiting to see if they release the version from the Special Edition DVD on Blu-Ray at some point. I've also held out on TFF on Blu-Ray I guess you can say a bit of in protest because the special effects are so crappy on that. It'd just feel like the Blu-Ray of that would be putting lip stick on a pig. Why do I want to see bad special effects in Hi-Def? :barf:. I continue to hold a sliver of hope that Paramount someday might have a heart and finally allow the effects to be 'fixed' on that one...then I'd buy the Blu-Ray for that. Probably not going to happen, but unless it does, no Blu-Ray for TFF. Take that Paramount :nyah:

And to be honest, with progressive scanning on my DVD player the Special Edition DVD's actually look pretty good. So that's helped me hold out on TMP, TFF and TUC for if/when I get the preferred versions I want on Blu-Ray. I haven't felt a burning desire to get Blu-Rays of those just to have them.

I thought that scene (with Spock and Saavik speaking in the Vulcan language) was always in the movie. Am I remembering wrong?

Nope. Supposedly that scene showed up on an ABC airing one time back then in the 1980s from what i heard.

But officially the Directors Edition/Collectors Edition DVD put that scene back in the movie so its pretty much a special extended version like what Peter Jackson did with his Lord of the Rings movies
 
I just dont like the newer DVD/Blu ray re-releases of the old Star Trek movies. those versions barely have any bonus features where the older Directors Edition/Collectors Edition DVDS of the old Star Trek movies they have the bonus features.
 
as for that hallway scene with Saavik and Spock where Saavik makes a comment about Kirk and Spock saying something about humans or anyone not being perfect. That was never in the movie. I think that was added also when aired on ABC back then anyway.

Whatever anyway.

the Directors Collectors Edition DVD of Star Trek II is the best in my opinion.

No, the conversation between Spock and Saavik about Kirk being "so-- human" was definitely in the theatrical release.

Nope, that can't be accurate. The VHS I watched as a younger, and have now, have that scene in it. Never watched it on TV.
 
I still have a numbered / limited edition box set of "letterboxed" TOS films from the mid-90's. And I also have the Special Edition / Director's Edition DVD sets.

I watch the Blu-ray disk versions now though. I've seen those older versions enough. The only DVD I still watch is the TMP Director's Cut, because it's not available in BR. I prefer TUC's theatrical cut. The additions they made to the home movie release were pretty superfluous and make an already awkwardly-edited film feel even less cohesive.

Yes it was definitely in the original DVD release of TWOK, which was the theatrical version.

I can confirm that the Spock/Saavik scene is in the theatrical cut Blu-ray release. There was an alternate version of the Kirk/Saavik turbolift scene on the Director's Edition (alternating close-ups instead of the two-shot), along with a few other changes.

On the bonus features front, most of the video material from the DVD special editions made it over, along with some new HD features and a new commentary. I am aware of the text trivia tracks from the Okudas not making it over, as well as the Wise commentary and some alternate TMP scenes. I do miss the Okuda tracks but not to the extent of wanting to keep the older versions just for them.
 
yea well, the Saavik and Spock speaking Vulcan in the hallway scene I dont remember that scene even when i was a little kid back the and watched it on HBO.

that scene was new to me when the Directors Edition/Collectors Edition DVDS came out for the first 3 old Star Trek movies.

and that scene just kind of looks weird for an extra scene put back in. Sticks out like a sore thumb.

Old movies Im fine with a few of them having old scenes put back in where they were cut like Terminator 2 or Dune or whatever.

But old scenes cut out in an old Star Trek movie, they had a good reason to be cut out or shortened.

Special extended versions of movie im ok with just depends on the movie itself and the genre

Yes, it was.

But the missing scene with Kirk and Spock discussing Saavik, and her half-Romulan heritage, was only ever in the ShoWest advance presentation trailer. It has never been restored.

You are mixing your memories. The scene that was "lost" - and never a part of any version of the whole film - is the one above, from the ShoWest trailer (and the novelization). Kirk and Spock discussing Saavik, and her half-Romulan heritage.

As far as I recall, the scene was never removed from any version. (Scenes were added for the TV presentation, and Nick Meyer retained those for his DVD DE.) The Kirk/Saavik elevator scene, just before McCoy interrupts was different for the TV premiere: it was filmed as a series of alternating closeups and they seem to be flirting. The original theatrical uses a two-shot of that scene.)

The Robert Wise commentary was specially about the DVD DE, so it does not track with the theatrical version of TMP. To use it, he would be discussing things not being seen onscreen. It will return, I am sure, in 2022, with the new HD version of the DE.

I always thought the line was “That young man is my son” not “he’s my son” and that seems lot better to me. It’s like a proud father excited to give his best friend some news.
