What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Yeah, this might be an unpopular opinion but I don't hold much in the way of ill feelings towards the writers. They have responded to the pressures of the fan base as best they can with as much BTS drama that has been going on, firings, pandemic, etc. I think they were definitely caught in a rock and a hard place and going in to the future seemed the most viable of the options and potentially where they could weather that backlash a little bit easier.

Also, honestly, culture shock would have been difficult to go with anyway because it often times falls in to "fish out of water" style gags, or like Data not understanding humanity. Is it realistic and certainly plausible? 100%. Is it what has been demonstrated to be wanted? No, not at all. So, as most humans do, we return back to basics and our comfort zone.

... but one thing I consider to be a mark against the third season of DSC is how easily the Discovery crew adjust to the 32nd Century. I think back to how someone from 1090 AD would do in 2021, then I think of how the crew of Discovery from 2258 does in 3189 and that's not how it would be, given everything else. With Burnham, it's different. She had an entire year to adjust. But the rest of the crew didn't.

On the other hand, a person from 1500 BC might fit right in with the people in 500 BC.

I think the bigger issue is how little the difference is between the two, technologically speaking. You'd expect that kind of difference in technology over 50 years, not a millenium

A technological plateau is, apparently, a thing...

Moore's Law is no longer true, indeed, but I wouldn't say all of technology is on a plateau.
For instance, things like CRISPR are very promising.

(I also disagree with the premise of the first article that a plateau in hardware means software innovation will have to step up - it's not like computer scientists were inactive while the hardware was increasing in power - especially considering computational complexity: finding a better algorithm usually in much bigger performance increases than improving hardware ... but we're straying away from the topic)

'Darmok' is a nice episode until Enterprise fires on the Tamarian ship, that wasn't very TNG style. What if the Tamarians had a massive fleet and with it they would wipe out the Federation because Enterprise declared war by shooting at them....

Then we'd be spared those largely dreadful TNG movies... which weren't very TNG style either... :guffaw:

after watching it tonight I am totally ok that virtually all of Red Squad was wiped out in DS9 “Valiant”. So many arrogant jerks.

Anyone wanna hear my weird-ass headcanon that reconciles 2 Andorian genders with 4 Andorian genders and basically explains how both can be true? It may be a Controversial Star Trek Opinion.

I mean, sure, but didn't the novels already cover it?

Riker's decision was certainly a questionable one. Was one captain's life worth risking a war for? I think that Picard would have said no.

Say what you like about the Voyager series (and god knows I have), but the USS Voyager herself is the best-designed, most consistently-presented, most well-realised ship in the whole Trek oeuvre.

Unless you count her shuttlecraft and photon torpedo inventories. ;)

It's a very early episode where Janeway says they have "38 photon torpedoes left and no way to replace them". I'm quite happy to believe that once they started trading properly with various Delta Quadrant races they were able to get the resources to manufacture more. Consider that they were able to build the Delta Flyer – two of them in fact – and that would consume far more of much the same resources as building either a photon torpedo or a shuttlecraft. The Cydonia 6 Intrepid class blueprints also show how it'd be possible for Voyager to have a large complement of shuttles aboard as standard anyway.

I like both onscreen versions of Zefram Cochrane and yes, they work together to feel like the same man if you believe almost 150 years with the Companion made him very mellow.

Fair enough. Acquiring a new source of energy (the ability to refine deuterium instead of harvesting it) and a high-end industrial replicator would have resolved the issue. But they could have told us, so that it's not one minute, Janeway can't replicate eight ounces of java, the next they can build a 50-foot, 100-ton experimental shuttle with warp engines and 1.5 PW of phaser power, from scratch.

I like the TOS Enterprise, NX-01 and NCC-1701-D a lot more than Voyager but she's definitely not the ugliest hero ship in the franchise.
