DC Comics Ongoing Discussion

July solicits are out.

So, Son of Kal-El, Superman & the Authority (which, apparently, will factor into the other Superman books, so trade-waiting ain't an option for this), JLI, SHAZAM!, Static Shock, Icon & Rocket, Blue & Gold (okay, this might be a candidate for trade-waiting), plus a bunch of titles double-ship and, oh yeah, an Aquaman Anniversary hardcover. And there's a Huntress oneshot with art by David Lapham. Sheesh, this is going to be an expensive month.

This year's DC Fandome announced for October 16!

Comic Book Resources posted a cover of the upcoming issue of Justice League/Crime Syndicate, with Earth-3 Luthor on it. He's now being drawn/illustrated to look like Luthor from Superman and Lois.

I don't have instagram. I will buy anything Legion, and I enjoyed Bendis' 12 issues but to me he has demonstrated that he doesn't understand the Legion with this extended break. Great epic stories are memorable but what makes the Legion of Super-Heroes great is the characters. They are personalities you want to visit every month--they don't need big, epic stories all the time. What works best are the slow-burn B-stories that lead to epic moments down the road.

To be fair, taking this long break is most probably mandated by DC, as the beginning of the break coincided with the launch of Infinite Frontier (and DC started IF with fewer titles, though they're constantly adding to them with every new month). Same could be true about making it easy to collect epic story arcs. We know there was such a mandate both at DC and Marvel in the early 2000s when trade-waiting became a thing.

Also, Bendis try to put some soap opera elements like Superboy and Saturn Girl getting together, as well as set-up for future story arcs like the mystery around Gold Lantern in the 12 issues.

Brian Michael Bendis promises something exciting in the offing for the Legion of Super-Heroes:

The single worst Legion writer ever, but I was hoping he was finally done destroying them when the book ended. He already made them into the "Legion of Millennial and Gen Z stereotypes", what the fuck else can he do to them at this point? The depths of his shitty writing really know no bounds.

Thanks for sharing.

I particularly like Bendis’s take on Imra (my favorite Legionnaire in any incarnation). She’s often portrayed as rather cerebral, but Bendis gives her a joyful enthusiasm that’s thoroughly endearing.

Coming in August:

Three-issue miniseries in the Prestige Plus format. Written by Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie, art by Mirka Andolfo. Black Label, too.

Another new title announced for August is the 7-issue mini series "The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box":
Z1Gitah.jpg

The G.C.P.D. discover a mysterious corpse, a magical box, and a murderer's row of the city's most dangerous villains sitting in a jail cell. Now all they need to figure out is what exactly happened! Fortunately, one suspect is willing to talk. Unfortunately, it's The Joker. And he's holding all the cards. Launching on August 3 with a debut issue by Matthew Rosenberg, Jesús Merino, Joshua Hixon and Ulises Arreola, over the course of seven installments of The Joker Presents: A Puzzlebox, The Joker introduces seemingly unconnected stories of his fellow inmates. As the series progresses, it becomes apparent that each tale is actually a piece of The Joker's larger plan. Does an agent of chaos even make plans? Superstar writer Matthew Rosenberg, magnificent artist Jesús Merino, and a multitude of rising-star artists invite you to spend a night in the Gotham Central interrogation room to make sense of murder, mayhem, and mystery—as told by the Clown Prince of Crime himself! Can you solve this puzzle before the sun comes up?

There are some further artists announced for the further issues. I don't think I'll buy these, myself, but it does feel in the spirit of Gotham Central. But apparently, you need a big name character to sell the books, so the Joker gets to be in the title.

And then, with this week's "Stargirl Spring Break Special", two more projects are teased.

Ongoing series?! Mini series?! Another one-shot?! We'll see.

... the return of the JSA:

Good Lord. If this project is actually be from the team of Johns & Hitch, it's no wonder it took so long before we heard about it. They've hopefully worked on it long enough to have 9/10ths of it finished, or there will be a shit ton of delays.
